To make your searches at CharityVillage® more effective, here are a few basic rules about how our search engine works:
- Consecutive words in the search box are treated as a phrase. For example, keying in executive director will only return documents with the phrase "executive director" in them. It won't return documents with phrases like "the director will report to the executive committee."
- To find multiple words in a document, use boolean operators such as AND, OR, NOT or NEAR.
Examples:
| To Search For |

- Use the wildcard operator (*) to find words with the same prefix. Example: fund* finds fund, fundraising, fundraiser, funding, etc.
- You should not use the following characters at the beginning of your search string: ! @ # $ ^ & ( ) | { } [ ] > < , ~ % * : ; ? = _ \ . They will return a search error. Rather, use them in the middle of searches -- e.g. volunteer & Lunenburg.
