CFC assists community foundationsJuly 28, 1995; Canadian FundRaiser
Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) has launched a Technical and Professional Assistance Program designed to offer its members assistance in general management, asset development, grant making, communications and providing help with operating costs through a matching grant process.Promoting, supporting and enhancing the community foundation movement in Canada is what CFC is all about. In 1994, ten new community foundations were developed and registered as charities bringing the total of Canadian community foundations to sixty-two. Fifty-five are CFC members. Collectively, CFC members hold over $600 million in assets and made grants of $33 million to charitable organizations in 1994. Education and social services received the lion's share of funding, although members made significant grants to health, arts and culture and the environment as well.
"We believe that these impressive figures point to the success of the community foundation concept in Canada. Yet the potential for community foundations is barely tapped. The potential is there to help build strong communities through growing endowments, creative grant making and innovative leadership," explained Kent Newcomb, President and Executive Director of CFC. "In order for community foundations in partnership with individuals and organizations, as well as business and government to fulfill their potential, they require skill and information along with the ability to demonstrate leadership and participate in community problem-solving."
Last year CFC made many other contributions strengthening the capacity of community foundations to reach their potential. It introduced an overview of ethics and standards, provided start-up support to eight emerging community foundations, and held a national conference in Vancouver drawing over 150 participants.
Aside from the Technical Professional Assistance Program, the priorities for this year will focus on bolstering member communications, developing pro-active stances in the area of government relations and issues impacting philanthropy, and the assurance of sound core funding for the organization through a fundraising initiative.
