Reports To: Residential Coordinator

Job Term: Full Time - Permanent

Salary:  $37,071 - $50,373 annually, plus benefits

Hours: 35 hours per week

Language: Fluency in English. Bilingualism (English/French) will be considered an asset

Program Summary

The John Howard Society Enhanced Supportive Housing Program is for men and women who are long-term shelter users. The program provides semi-independent accommodation and support to men and women, age 18 and over. The John Howard Society of Ottawa manages the site with support from Ottawa Inner City Health and the support of other community partners. 

Applying Housing First Principles, the Enhanced Supportive Housing provides adults an opportunity to access safe accommodations and utilize intensive on-site supports to assist with their life goals, regardless of their complexities and challenges. This program strives to contribute to a reduction in the number of individuals using homeless shelters or living on the street.




  • University Degree/College Diploma in a Social Services program OR working towards completion of one

Preferred Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years working with homeless population
  • Experience in housing/residential setting
  • Experience working in a Harm Reduction environment  
  • Experiences working as part of an Interdisciplinary team 


  • Having attained the required skills and/or be willing to be trained in required skill areas

Required Training:

  • ASIST Training: Suicide Intervention
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Mental Health First Aid


Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Competency engaging and establishing rapport with clients experiencing mental health and substance use issues.
  • Competency using crisis management skills if required
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (Residential Tenancies Act and Mental Health Act) as well as clear understanding of operating within agency policies and procedures
  • Basic counselling skills to support interactions, and possible case plan tasks with adult men as directed by counselling team
  • Strong organizational skills to support completion of various maintenance, cleaning and other administrative tasks while on shift
  • Competency in written skills to support log entries, report summaries


Successful Candidates will:

  • Provide a recent Criminal Record Check
  • Have a demonstrated ability to work within timelines and deadlines
  • Possess strong time management and organizational skills
  • Have an ability to effectively deal with neighbour or community complaints after hours if required
  • Have excellent people skills to facilitate relationships with clients, colleagues, supervisors, and community members
  • Have a genuine interest in working with adults in a caring and empathetic manner
  • Be thorough in building maintenance, upkeep and cleaning duties as required
  • Be willing to work weekends
  • Be flexible and available to take extra shifts when required
