On any given day of the week, you will find men, women and children, recent newcomers and long-time Vancouverites at the Alliance Française Vancouver (AF). As a Canadian registered charity, we embrace our mission to promote Francophonie, French language and cultural diversity.

Founded in 1904, we are the third largest Alliance Française in North America after New York and Toronto and part of an international network of 834 centres in 132 countries. On this, our 115 Anniversary, we are preparing for an expansion into a purpose-built facility which will allow us to continue providing high-quality education and contemporary cultural programming, but now inside a beautiful structure, accessible and welcoming to all.

Objective: The Development Manager (DM) will work closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and leadership team to develop and drive a new comprehensive and growth-oriented fundraising program with both annual and capital opportunity.

Outline: Reporting to, and working in close collaboration with the Executive Director, the Development Manager will design and execute the development and community engagement strategy for the Alliance Française.  This new position will lead the solicitation of individual and corporate donations and grants; oversee gift tracking, reporting, research, acknowledgement, analysis and reporting of outcomes; support for related meetings and events associated with development efforts; supervision of two part-time staff (communications and grant-writer) volunteer activities and the coordination of in-kind donations. This role requires the incumbent have passion for French culture, an entrepreneurial spirit, willingness to engage with both prospects and donors and always, attention to detail.

 

Necessary skills/qualifications: 

  • Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible development and fundraising experience in performing job functions related to this description;
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required;
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication in English, and ideally in both official languages, communication with tact, discretion, and sense of collaboration and consensus building;
  • Experience soliciting major gifts for annual funding priorities is required, capital campaign experience preferred;
  • Excellent technical skills including high proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, donor/volunteer databases (preferred experience with Salesforce);
  • Knowledge of the latest advances in effective use of digital and social media for effective organizational communication of fundraising priorities, including online communities and crowdfunding;
  • Proven problem-solving ability, time management skills and supervisory experience;
  • Management experience in an entrepreneurial, collaborative culture where results depend on teamwork with staff and volunteers;
  • Ability to handle projects under time and resource pressure;
  • Ability to coach and support staff (non-fundraising), board and volunteers as solicitors;
  • Self-starter with the ability to prioritize among competing goals and initiate process improvements for this new fundraising program; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with people of diverse lifestyles, backgrounds, ethnic and cultural groups.
