Fred Victor Centre is currently recruiting for a Women’s Bakery Facilitator to join the Training and Development team in Food Services. The Women’s Bakery Facilitator is part of the Employment and Training Team at Fred Victor leading all workshops and training for participants of the Women’s Bakery program and will work under the supervision of the Women’s Bakery Coordinator or designate.

The Women’s Bakery provides a safe and professional environment encouraging ambition, restoration and second chances. Using baking as a tool we foster employability and entrepreneurship and equip women with practical and transferrable skills for the working world. A sequence of classes, site visits, work experience, guest speakers and paid employment placements empower women to build a positive future. The program focuses on skills development resulting in a single mastered product - gourmet cookies for targeted markets. A 3-month education and training segment is followed by 3 months of paid on-the-job placements setting 24 women/year up for improved income, health and housing.

The Women’s Bakery Facilitator works closely with Fred Victor Employment and Training Services staff, Program staff, partner agencies and other community service organizations to deliver the program curriculum. The Facilitator contributes to the overall goals and success of Fred Victor’s Employment and Training Programs and helps ensure that training and development programs meet the needs of the community members. The Facilitator helps identify trends and gaps in service needs.

The Women’s Bakery Facilitator assists in the selection of participants. The Facilitator also assists with marketing and outreach activities and will act in a cooperative manner as part of the Employment & Training Services team.


Workshops and Job Search

  • Teach 24 adult women basic baking curriculum;
  • Instruct participants on the safe and proper use of supplies and equipment, and safe food handling techniques;
  • In collaboration with Employment & Training Services, facilitate career planning and job search for program participants;
  • Assist with participant recruitment, intake and assessment;
  • Provide on-going coaching, assistance, and encouragement to participants;
  • Assists with developing participant’s employment action plans and program follow-up;
  • Recommend resource materials for individuals;
  • Assists with coordinating and welcoming guest speakers;
  • Makes referrals to other Fred Victor Centre and community supports.

Program Planning

  • Participate in regular planning activities to support the development of goals and work plans for Employment & Training Services;
  • Ensure that programming and services reflects the needs of the participants, FVC community, and larger community interests.

Program Evaluation

  • Implement evaluation processes and identify recommendations for improvements for services in accordance with the FVC Annual Review process and funders;
  • Ensures participants and community members are regularly consulted in program design and evaluation processes and that services appropriately reflect the organization’s philosophy and goals.

Administrative Requirements

  • Monitor program attendance;
  • Assist with collation of monthly statistics and reports;
  • Participate in program follow-up, including writing participant follow-up reports and participant follow-up;
  • Maintain a tidy and organized work environment. Complete timesheets in an efficient manner.

Outreach and Marketing

  • Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of outreach strategies for the development of partnerships with key stakeholders including community members, other FVC programs (e.g., drop-in), other training and employment services, educational institutions, employers, guest speakers, and other people who support the work of Employment & Training Services;
  • Assists with marketing strategies to increase the visibility of Women’s Bakery and Employment & Training Services and increase the number of people utilizing our programs.

Committee Work

  • Attend Employment & Training Services Team Meetings;
  • Participates in at least one Fred Victor Centre committee;
  • Participate in Employment and Training Services Team planning and development meetings
  • Other committee involvement as negotiated. Crisis Intervention and Conflict Mediation
  • When appropriate and needed, intervene and mediate in crisis and conflicts of volunteers and community members;
  • Works cooperatively and professionally with all staff, volunteers, and student placements.

Other duties as assigned by the Women’s Bakery Coordinator or designate.


  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in retail or commercial baking production, and demonstrated ability to teach baking and facilitate employment related workshops and curriculum
  • Current Food Handler’s Certificate
  • Demonstrated experience in program implementation, program delivery and program management
  • Ability to handle a wide range of responsibilities with minimal supervision
  • Strong strategic planning and problem solving skills
  • Experience working with individuals who have experienced homelessness, poverty, mental health, and/or addiction issues
  • Ability to interact with and communicate with a wide variety of people with diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of front line employment support and relationship to the needs of clients; including life skills and job skills training would be an asset
  • Knowledge and understanding of the types of employment barriers faced by marginalized individuals
  • Effective written and oral communications including public speaking and interview skills
  • Effective listening, interpersonal and group facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of local issues and a broad network of personal and professional relationships within the community
  • Experience ensuring successful program and client outcomes
  • Experience with partnership development
  • Experience writing reports
  • Adaptability and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing work priorities
  • Willingness to accommodate a flexible work schedule as some on-call work may be required on evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to stand for long periods, stoop, bend, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and database applications

Working Conditions: The Women’s Bakery Facilitator will work in a hot, sometimes noisy kitchen environment. The Women’s Bakery Facilitator will work amongst various Fred Victor sites including but not limited to: The Fred Victor Employment and Training Services office at 59 Adelaide Street East, 20 Palace Street housing complex and 145 Queen Street East community services space as well as attending meetings and events outside of the office(s) whenever necessary. The Women’s Bakery Facilitator may also be required to visit other Fred Victor sites to co-ordinate employment programs.

The work involves interacting with a wide range of people and involves regular stress and handling multiple demands effectively. This work requires commitment and adherence to the values and goals of Fred Victor and a willingness to work respectfully with people who are homeless or living on low income.

The Women’s Bakery Facilitator will participate in the annual recruitment of 24 Women’s Bakery Program participants.

The final candidate(s) will be required to provide a current police reference check prior to being hired.
