POSITION OBJECTIVE:  Within the context and mission of The Salvation Army Immigrant & Refugee Services, prepare and deliver English as a Second Language classes to adults and assist the E.S.L. & Program Coordinator in implementing the ESL Summer Program during July and August 2018.

DIRECT SUPERVISOR:  E.S.L. & Program Coordinator


  • Prepare lesson plans for adult E.S.L. students
  • Deliver lesson plans (Classes 12 hours/week)
  • Perform ESL assessments and registration.
  • Assess ESL skills using Canadian Language Benchmarks during last week of class.
  • Assist the Coordinator to plan and organize the summer E.S.L. program
  • Assist in the day-to-day operation of the Immigrant & Refugee Services office
  • Organize and participate in at least one field trip for students
  • Assist in providing settlement resources for clients and students
  • Assist in the planning, outreach and materials for next year’s class.
  • Participate in Staff Meetings, as required.


  • The successful candidate must meet the requirements under the Canada Summer Jobs Program
  • Currently studying for a TESL Certificate or teaching certificate and/or has suitable experience.
  • Experience or background in a multicultural environment.
  • Able to work in a Christian organization and to promote the goals of the IRS mission & program.
  • Possesses computer skills
  • Works well independently and as a team player
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Available to work for the full 8 weeks
  • Flexible
  • Requires a Criminal Background Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening, complete the Armatus Abuse Risk Management and Employment Health & Safety online trainings

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible, youth must:   

  • Be between 15 & 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and Is legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Additional Information:   A successful VSS/police check as per Salvation Army Policies and Procedures is required
