PEER SUPPORTER (part-time)

Posting Start Date: March 7, 2019

Posting End Date: March 21, 2019

Stella’s Place is a community-based, integrated peer and clinical mental health service for young adults (16-29 years).  Every program at Stella’s Place has been co-designed by young adults and content experts.  At Stella’s Place, there are a range of Peer Support roles, including on-line, at the Stella’s Place site, and in other locations in the community. The presence of Peer Supporters at Stella’s Place is critical to being able to respond to the needs of young adults who walk-in, who are part of the community, or who are involved in programs.

Peer Supporters at Stella’s Place help create a welcoming community, engage and support young adults in wellness and recovery-focused activities, and provide support, information, navigation, and assistance in accessing resources.  Peer Supporters work independently as well as with a multi-disciplinary team including psychiatrists, clinicians, and other peer supporters.

Stella’s Place is currently looking to hire two part-time One on One Peer Supporters.  The One on One Peer Supporter will be expected to meet one on one with participants coping with various mental health challenges, and will be expected to draw upon their personal lived experience of mental health challenges in order to effectively provide intentional peer support to participants of this program.  This individual will be expected to operate from a strengths-based, holistic, and trauma-informed perspective. The One on One Peer Supporter will be expected to operate within the guiding values and principles of peer support as outlined by Stella’s Place (based on the Mental Health Commission of Canada). The individual within this role will be working to support the goals that participants have outlined for themselves and will draw from their lived experience as a means of inspiring hope, fostering self-determination, and exploring coping strategies and resources available to the participant.  The One on One Peer Supporter will be expected to provide structured appointments to participants who have gained access to the service through the appropriate channels. This individual will be expected to complete all appropriate documentation procedures for participant interactions and will be expected to engage in regular supervision with the Peer Initiatives Manager.

This service aims to support participants coping with various experiences of mental health challenges, who are interested in receiving one-to-one support that is based on the shared lived experience perspective.  It is expected that participants accessing this service will experience reduced feelings of social isolation, reduced experiences of hospitalization, increased feelings of empowerment, increased resiliency and increased access to community resources.

Supervision and support for this position will be provided by the Peer Initiatives Manager.
