The Opportunity

Yellow Brick House is looking for 2 - 3 professional, skilled shelter workers to join our shelter in providing Relief coverage for all shifts, daytime weekdays and weekends, as well as overnights. 

About Yellow Brick House

Yellow Brick House provides life-saving services and prevention programs to meet the diverse needs of individuals, families and communities impacted by violence.

Our four core services are two emergency shelters with 51 beds and cribs, the 24 hour crisis and support line monitored every day of the year, the community counselling and support services and the public education programs.  Last year, Yellow Brick House provided life-saving support to over 5,300 women and children. The relief position is available only at the shelters, one located in southern York region and one located in mid area – York region.  

Key Accountabilities 

  • Provides support to women who might have been traumatized by the abuse they have experienced
  • Acts as a resource to clients in the area of mental health, harm reduction and the dynamics of gender based violence
  • Provides crisis intervention to residents by telephone, text or in-person
  • Conducts intake and discharge interviews with residents as required
  • Assists women to understand the cycle of violence and the effects of violence on themselves and their children
  • Provides support to address women’s needs in a communal living setting
  • Overall monitoring of the shelter(s) to ensure safety for all residents and staff
  • Liaison with community resources as necessary, in assisting and supporting residents throughout the shift (i.e. hospital, police, Children’s Aid Society, etc.)
  • Trouble-shooting of building maintenance issues as needed. 

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Completion of a social services diploma or undergraduate degree
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience working with a diverse clientele
  • Mental health/addiction counselling experience would be an asset
  • knowledge of the dynamics of gender based violence is required
  • knowledge and understanding of abuse/violence against women and children
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficiency in another language in addition to English, used frequently by our service users, is considered an asset 
  • Ability to work as a valuable member of the shelter team in conveying information, completing tasks, etc. 

Additional Information

  • A Vulnerable Sector Screening is required
  • Must be available for a variety of shifts at both shelters.  Location of shelters is confidential, however their general vicinity was noted above.

Hours: These are Relief Part-time occasional positions. You must be able/willing to work weekday/weekend overnight or weekday/weekend day shifts.  Please note in your cover letter which shift you are most available and interested in.
