Knox is a Christian church located at 630 Spadina Avenue in Toronto, Canada.  Knox is called to “Follow Jesus, Love the City, and Serve the World”.  With approximately 25 employees, we are looking for someone who is passionate about Jesus and desires to see the church flourish, and is someone who has the Human Resources leadership expertise to help our staff team achieve their full potential.

Position Title:                   Director of Human Resources

Reports to:                         Chief Administrative Officer & Treasurer

Hours:                                  This is a part-time contract position (16 hours a week on a 1 year contract) with the potential to become part-time permanent after 1 year.  The hourly wage for this position is $30 - $35 / hour depending on experience.

Purpose:                              The Director of Human Resources is a key strategic leader responsible for creating and leading an HR function at Knox Church, with the overall objective of multiplying the fruitfulness of our existing ministry.  Working with the Senior Minister, the CAO&T, the Personnel Ministry Team, and other leadership bodies as required, the HR Director will provide leadership in all areas of human resources including recruitment, on-boarding, transitions, compensation, benefits, policies, records, staff events, performance appraisals and plans, training, development and culture.  The HR Director must be passionate about advancing the ministry of Knox Church, must possess knowledge of HR best practices, and needs to be willing to roll up his or her sleeves to design and implement creative solutions that align with our ministry goals and that address our HR needs.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Develop and lead a team of paid staff and volunteers in the creation and ongoing management of a human resources function. Act as the Team Lead for the Personnel Ministry Team which meets 1 evening a month (currently the first Monday evening of each month).
  • Drive the ongoing development of our staff team through leadership of our employee training and development programs and processes, as well as our annual performance appraisals and development plans processes.
  • Update, develop and create personnel policies and procedures, and work with ministry leaders to set priorities in addressing personnel issues.
  • Create and maintain a personnel records management framework to ensure that all HR staff records (digital and paper) are accurate, up-to-date, and compliant with legal requirements.
  • Lead the continued development of our compensation strategy and align with our staff development process. Establish and administer our compensation program including job descriptions, grade levels, salary ranges, and periodic (annual) benchmarking and adjustment.
  • Ensure compliance with employment legislation including AODA, ESA, and HRC.
  • Work with the Finance Team to administer payroll and employee benefit programs including our group benefits plan and our defined contribution registered pension plan.
  • Recommend and lead the implementation of an HR information system for ongoing use by the church.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ, living in dependence on His indwelling Spirit and desiring obedience to Him
  • Approachable, trustworthy, one who performs to the highest ethical standards
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business or a related field
  • Current Professional in Human Resources (CHRP) certification preferred
  • Minimum of ten years of previous experience in a HR role required
  • A strong knowledge of HR laws, practices and policies required
  • Takes initiative and is self-motivated
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Strong administrative skills, process and systems driven

Working conditions:

  • Vulnerability Sector Screening must be completed
  • This role may involve working extra hours as required, including possibly on some Sundays
