JOB TITLE: Youth Counsellor (Part- Time- 2-3 days a week)

PROGRAM: Youth Counselling Program  

REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator

The John Howard Society of York Region is a non-profit, charitable organization serving residents of York Region. The organization works with individuals involved in any stage of criminal justice involvement and their families.

The Youth Counselling Program is an evidence-based program that builds social and emotional learning (SEL) skills to promote mental health and address addictions. The program is offered for youth ages 11-24. Youth will enhance knowledge and skills to improve their capacity to make informed choices supporting healthy living. The function of this position is to provide individualized counselling for youth at the JHS office or in community agency locations.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:  

  • Meet with youth to complete comprehensive assessment and intake
  • Provide a mixture of daytime and evening weekly counselling sessions
  • Provide intervention, with clinical outcomes to be achieved through application of evidenced-based practices with ongoing monitoring of impact
  • Complete all required intake forms, case notes, statistics, and reporting as required
  • Distribute and collect pre and post evaluations
  • Monitor completion of counselling requirements and prepare reports for court
  • Adhere to directives and program standards of John Howard Society of York Region
  • Complete all required training
  • Attend staff meetings

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BSW, MSW, College Counselling Diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Membership with a relevant college/registering body required
  • Minimum 2 years direct care experience working with youth with substance use and mental health problems
  • Demonstrates a caring, supportive approach that maintains dignity and integrity of youth receiving services
  • Possess an understanding of institutional and other systemic barriers and how they impact youth development and access to services
  • Understanding of the YCJA and complex criminogenic risks and needs facing young people is considered an asset
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills and abilities
  • Knowledge of community resources for youth throughout York Region
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques
  • A flexible and non-judgmental approach to people and work
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to work with diverse youth populations and communities with an awareness of socioeconomic and language barriers
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate for evening and daytime sessions as needed
  • Ability to speak a second language is an asset
  • Access to a vehicle is preferred
