About The Stop:

The Stop began over 35 years ago as one of North America’s first food banks and it has grown into a vibrant community food centre using food as a tool to connect with community in addressing poverty, social isolation and health in one of Toronto’s lowest-income neighbourhoods. The Stop’s mission is to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds community and address inequality and social justice.


Reporting to the Team Lead of The Healthy Families Program, the Family Support Outreach Worker’s role is to enhance the health of women, infants and children through supportive programs and home visits. We seek a candidate who has a strong understanding of the community and challenges faced by new parents and their families, and a desire to support them in fostering change in their lives and community. 


  • Provide information on the Healthy Families program
  • Intake and assessment of participants to determine supports required
  • Assist participants to access community resources, accompaniment and follow-up with referrals; maintain records of participants
  • Support Healthy Beginnings perinatal program weekly, and provide individual support to participants
  • Visit participants in their home and in the community and advocate on their behalf
  • Attend monthly Healthy Beginnings/Family Support team & case consultation meetings
  • Participate in ongoing training and supervision
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor


  • A minimum of 1-2 years’ experience working as Family Support Worker, or similar position
  • Strong understanding of challenges faced by marginalized women with infants
  • Demonstrated experience working with women from diverse cultural backgrounds and families experiencing poverty and discrimination
  • Fluency in English and another language relevant to the community is an asset (i.e. Arabic, Mandarin, Hungarian, Portuguese, Spanish or French)
  • Knowledge of Toronto's social service sector, including food access programming, early childhood resources, women’s resources, and settlement resources
  • Demonstrated skills in personal development, advocacy, referrals and group facilitation
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Successful vulnerable sector screening confirmation condition of employment

Salary: $20.45/hour             

Hours: 20 hours per week   

Start date:  ASAP
