ROLE PURPOSE

As the Development Specialist, you provide support with integrated development and communications strategies across the organization.  You are highly organized & driven, with strong communication skills, and enjoy creating processes, materials and events that support the development of the organization.  You contribute to the planning, and ensure coordination of, organizational events, donor & member management, fund development, brand stewardship, community engagement and other organizational communications & development initiatives.

 

REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports and is accountable to the Senior Manager of Communications and Community Development
  • Participates as a member of the John Howard Society of the Lower Mainland (JHS) regional office support team

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Events

  • Contribute to the planning, and lead the execution of, key events within the agency’s calendar, including training & appreciation events, Annual General meetings and other organization-wide or community events
  • Coordinate all aspects of event promotion, organization, execution and marketing, including ensuring consistency across all communications channels relating to events and advancing continuous quality improvement through post-event surveys & reports

Communications & Marketing

  • Actively promote the consistent use of the JHS brand, including the development of processes, tools & education and providing support for their implementation
  • Assist in the design and development of organization marketing materials
  • Support and contribute to department initiatives, including internal & external communications materials, projects and initiatives
  • Assist in the development of strategies and information related to JHS in the public or media, including proactive events, marketing and public relations initiatives

Community Engagement

  • Assist in the development & deployment of the organization’s community engagement and relationship-building strategy

Donor & Member Management

  • Foster and maintain relationships with current & potential donors; ensure ongoing donor appreciation and engagement
  • Coordinate the organization’s membership strategy and related processes, including membership management, recruitment, recognition and engagement initiatives

Fund Development

  • Support the development of the organization’s fundraising strategy and work towards annual goals by coordinating & executive various fundraising programs & events
  • Research, implement and oversee a province-wide proposal bank, including, where necessary, the support, coordination & production of funding applications and the development of sustainable administrative & reporting processes

 

QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a proven ability to work within a fast-paced, growth-focused environment.  The ideal candidate has:

  • A Bachelor's Degree or higher, with a minimum of 3 years of applicable or relevant transferable past work experience
  • Strong written communication skills, including impeccable English grammar and editing skills
  • Ability to develop strong collaborative relationships with a wide variety of individuals
  • Well-developed leadership skills with the capacity to reflect, promote & protect the culture & integrity of the organization & the services it provides and to manage situations with tact & diplomacy
  • Experience in creating and publishing written & visual content for print & digital communication channels
  • Extensive experience with appropriate software, including the Microsoft Office suite, SharePoint, Adobe Creative Cloud and content management systems
  • Ability to manage own schedule and work with a high degree of independence to successfully execute deliverables
  • Excellent time & project management skills, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment
  • Experience in working with fundraising-based infrastructure
  • Experience in managing grant proposals that pertain to a non-profit environment
  • Ability to present information in an insightful and structured manner (written and verbal)
  • Sensitivity to the political and cultural environment of international public agencies or similarly complex environment
  • Preference for candidates with knowledge of non-profit work environments, especially the Criminal Justice System and Developmental Disabilities

 

COMPENSATION

Annual Salary will be negotiated based on experience and qualifications.  This role will also be eligible for the Society’s comprehensive Management Benefits Package.
