Reports to the Executive Director

Hours of Work

The position is full time 30 hours per week:

  • 32.5 hours per week 
  • Monday 9:30 to 4pm
  • Tuesday 9:30 to 4pm
  • Wednesday 9:30 to 4pm
  • Thursday 8:30 to 4pm
  • Friday 9:30 to 4pm
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends   and overtime is required
  • 2 x 15 minute breaks OR 1 x 30 minute lunch

Inclusive of micro/smoking breaks

Position Summary

Provides recreation and social support to ensure that the Centre operations are maintained in an effective, up-to-date and accurate manner together with staff, volunteers and students using best practice methods


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Maintain timely and effective communications with the members of the Centre to stay attuned to their needs and interests through the use of regular needs assessment tools
  • Responsible for recreational program implementation and infrastructure
  • Research, plan, coordinate, implement, deliver, participate, monitor and evaluate regular and seasonal activities for seniors from each of our service locations
  • Ensure that daily attendance is documented for each program/service at each location
  • Purchase, maintain and inventory all program equipment consistent with budget availability and spending limits
  • Evaluate programs and provide feedback as needed on a monthly basis
  • Supervise provision of safety for all activities, programs and services
  • Report and discuss program plans with the Executive Director for approval
  • Coordinate with the facility manager the use of necessary space and equipment
  • Provide on-site surveys and program feedback to the Executive Director
  • Develop action plans as required to improve or enhance programs and services
  • Attend necessary workshops, events and training seminars
  • Electronic correspondence, reports and other documents including monthly newsletter, posters and calendars
  • Ensure Membership and Volunteers lists are current and updated
  • Assist with the development and implementation of programs and services that meet the needs of a diverse population and incorporate the dimensions of wellness (social, physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual)
  • Plan the monthly calendar of programs/activities for the Centre;
  • Development and preparation of communication tools designed to provide residents, community members and seniors in the surrounding area, with information regarding current and future activities and special events
  • Recruit, orient, train, assign and recognize, staff, volunteers and co-op students
  • Appropriately match volunteers to ensure high quality volunteer experience
  • Responsible for the coordination of programs and services at all service locations
  • Conduct quality assurance audits and assessments, assist with program evaluations and annual reporting to Catholic Charities of the Archdioceses of Toronto, Ministry of Seniors Affairs - SALC, City of Toronto -CSP
  • Provide and direct light housekeeping daily as per schedule
  • Conduct fire drills and ensure procedures for fire safety and emergency procedures are kept current.


  • Recruit, train and manage the Program Staff, Volunteers and Students, assign tasks, and complete annual performance reviews
  • Ensure that appropriate staff, volunteers and instructors are in place to manage the program activities

Public Relations

  • Provide public presentations and demonstrations as required
  • Coordinate and participate in fund raising events as required
  • Coordinate the production of newsletter articles and other promotional materials
  • Attend and/or present at relevant trade shows, volunteer fairs and organizations
  • Interface with, and cultivate relations with, professional and community partners
  • Maintain member and volunteer database

Administrative Support

  • Participate in board meetings as required,
  • Lead the program budget development
  • Maintain program expenditures within budgeted parameters 

Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications, Credentials & Experience:

  • A graduate of a post-secondary education program relating to recreation, gerontology, community service, social work or proven related experience.
  • Current Standard First Aid / CPR from an accredited organization.
  • 1-3 years related experience in a community centre, retirement community or health care environment
  • Experience in volunteer management an asset
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to co-ordinate and plan;
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills;
  • Demonstration of a caring and compassionate attitude while working with seniors, volunteers and external community participants;
  • Ability to make decisions that respect participant choices;
  • Ability to mediate and assess risk
  • Ability to effectively and accurately read, write and communicate in English
  • Submit or agree to a Vulnerable Sector Screening/Criminal Record Check
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Software and Office 365 equipment;
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment
  • Experience working with volunteers 
  • Experience working with not-for-profit funders is an asset
  • Must be flexible and willing to work some evenings and weekends
  • Must be organized and tidy
  • Must possess a strong work ethic, punctual and dependable
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong client relation skills
  • Strong program evaluation skills
  • Current Police check (VSS) within 6 months
