Yonge Street Mission (YSM) is a Christian development agency committed to ending chronic poverty in Toronto within one generation. We go above and beyond meeting immediate needs by offering holistic programs, customized development plans, and personal pathways that guide transformation in the lives of people living with poverty from merely surviving to thriving.  Our Employment Services (ES) is looking to hire an Employment Counsellor who is passionate and called to support our community members and guide them towards meaningful employment.

Purpose of Role

This position is a direct report to the ES Supervisor and is responsible for program delivery under Employment Ontario’s (EO) guidelines.  YSM’s strategy, organizational values, and biblical standards are embedded in the work we do.


The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing employment counselling that includes: screening, intake, assessment, goal setting, monitoring, referrals and life-skills support to marginalized youth and newcomer youth to Canada
  • Detailed management of client’s information and progress in EO’s Information System and YSM’s internal database
  • Outcome focused case-management with the ability to support itinerant services, workshop development/facilitation and program innovation
  • Utilize strategic and informed outreach and engagement methods to mitigate barriers to employment
  • Maintaining a safe space for diverse participants, including the LGBTQ community, racialized participants, and people living with mental illness
  • Collaborating effectively within the employment services team and other YSM departments to create a supportive circle of care


The successful candidate will have the following skills and training

  • Post-secondary degree along with 2 years relevant work experience
  • Experience working with diverse youth facing multiple barriers to employment
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment, counselling, and case management
  • Ability to draw on strong motivational and rapport-building skills in a cross-cultural context
  • Results oriented with superior oral and written communication skills, excellent time management skills, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable in an unpredictable drop-in environment; ability to de-escalate conflict and interact with participants who have experienced various forms of trauma
  • Knowledge of job search strategies, Canadian Labour Market, and standard workplace practices
  • Strong administrative skills with attention to detail
  • A police check will be required / First aid training is an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to YSM’s principles of faith, mission and values
