Harm Reduction Outreach Worker


We are looking for an experienced, value-driven individual to conduct outreach and harm reduction services directed toward people who use drugs in Peel Region, including Needle Exchange, prevention activities targeted at-risk populations, and other community outreach initiatives. The Harm Reduction Outreach Worker will work as part of the Direct Services staff team to provide prevention and engagement supports for people who use drugs.

Specific duties and responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to the following and may be subject to change:


  • Provide harm reduction materials/supplies to people who use drugs in Peel Region
  • Provide educational materials on harm reduction, HIV/AIDS, Hep C, etc.
  • Provide support for people who use drugs with regards to health promotion, community resources/referrals, and one-on-one counselling
  • Order, stock and maintain needle exchange and other instruments with Peel Public Health
  • Maintain working relationships with community partner agencies
  • Develop and deliver prevention and harm reduction presentations/messages to target populations in a variety of venues, including parks, bars, community agencies, and online
  • Record and monitor statistical information to identify current issues and client needs
  • Liaise with managers of outreach venues to identify outreach spaces
  • Involve community partner agencies, health care providers, and stakeholders in the planning and delivery of educational material
  • Develop and maintain partnership opportunities to provide information and resource materials to promote the health of clients affected by HIV/AIDS and/or substance use
  • Actively participate in relevant networks and coalitions serving clients affected by HIV/AIDS and substance use
  • Provide information regarding concrete support services for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS and/or substance use and to provide educational material to enable clients to cope more effectively with issues and concerns related to HIV/AIDS and or/substance use
  • To recruit, orient, train, and monitor peer ambassadors (people who have lived experience with drug use)
  • To assist with agency's volunteer training, focusing on harm reduction and addiction issues


  • Post-secondary education in social services or related field or equivalent counselling/case management experience
  • Demonstrated understanding and working knowledge of addictions, sexuality and harm reduction principles and the ability to understand and practice harm reduction principles as they relate to substance use and sexual activity
  • Effective case management skills, including a strong ability to work from a client centered approach in a team environment
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, to anticipate potential problems/conflicts and take appropriate actions, and to meet deadlines.
  • Basic computer skills
