Job Title:                  Education Program Co-ordinator

Position Type:        Contract – 6 months, full-time:  May 2019 – October 2019 - with the possibility of extension to full-time, permanent.

Department:          Youth Development & Education

Location:                  Scarborough, ON

Mobility:                  Car required

Regular Hours:       9:00 PM – 5:00 PM 5 days/week (Saturdays mandatory during programming)

Extended Hours:    Evenings/weekends as required for facilitation of programs

Compensation:       $ 43 560 per annum


Primary Function:     The Education Program Co-ordinator, under the direction of the Manager - Youth Development & Education, will primarily be responsible to oversee all education related programs (including digital media programming) and to facilitate the effective and efficient delivery of activities for Weekends of Learning (Increase Your Success Tutoring, Clubs, Steelpan) and camps.


Areas of Responsibility:

  • Research and develop curriculum for education programs and present findings/suggestions to Manager for input into implementation
  • Support volunteer Tutors/Facilitators to plan, organize and implement the established curriculum ensuring parent involvement
  • Co-ordinate digital media programming through The Lab
  • Establish and maintain relationships with youth workers, social workers, community engagement workers, teachers and education assistants etc.
  • Supervise attendance and lesson plans to meet policies and procedures
  • Liaise with TDSB/TCDSB representatives and other agencies, especially those responsible for Black, African & Caribbean community to assist with problems they may be experiencing at schools
  • Facilitate workshops and creative activities on site, in schools and in the general community, as required
  • Co-ordinate Weekends of Learning and camp programming
  • Develop and maintain written program procedures and activities for use by new program facilitators and volunteers
  • Discuss student's progress with students and their parents and provide assessments and reports
  • Ensure that evaluation mechanisms such as attendance records and client feedback surveys are administered and analyzed
  • Co-ordinate and participate in case management, consultation, and departmental planning activities
  • Prepare monthly reports for Manager’s reports, presentations at staff meetings and year-end annual report
  • In conjunction with Volunteer Co-ordinator, recruit, orient and train volunteers and placement students for programs
  • Outreach to children and youth in schools and in the wider community to increase participation in Tropicana’s programs and special projects
  • Prepare financial requisitions and reports in a timely manner


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Degree in education along with OCT registration
  • Experience teaching Ontario education curriculum
  • Knowledge of issues affecting academic achievement especially as they pertain to Black, African and Caribbean children and youth in Toronto
  • Valid police clearance – vulnerable sector screening
  • Fluent in English – advanced speaking, reading and writing
  • Excellent written, verbal communication; facilitation and presentation skills
  • Analytical skills to review data on students to adjust the curriculum to suit their learning abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate staff, volunteers and program participants
  • Highly proficient computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office applications and social media
  • Knowledge of digital media programs such Adobe Suite
