Overall Purpose/Broad Function
The purpose of this new post is to lead on the implementation of Nutrition International’s new Program Gender Equality Strategy by supporting gender assessments, gender analysis and training at HQ (Ottawa) and in the ten NI countries of operation in Asia and Africa. The position also provides guidance on NI’s new Child Safeguarding policy and gender in the workplace at NI.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Support to NI’s gender mainstreaming approach
- Ensure each country team carries out at least one sex and gender based analysis (SGBA) by carrying out the analysis and/or supporting teams to work with local gender experts.
- Support program teams to incorporate SGBA into their project designs, formative research, monitoring and/or evaluation and to fill gender data gaps.
- Strengthen the capacity of NI staff to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
- Advocate for the importance of improving children’s, adolescent girls’ and women’s nutrition to advance gender equality
Quality assurance of NI’s documentation related to gender equality
- Quality assurance of program and research planning documentation as required. A specific focus will be on providing technical guidance in gender analysis throughout the project cycle, from design to evaluation.
- Collaborate with regional and country staff to identify appropriate consultants to support implementation, analysis and/or reporting.
- Conceptualize and help design innovative research opportunities and potential case studies in gender and Behavior Change interventions for NI country programs, with a greater focus on programs.
- Ensure gender equality is effectively mainstreamed in new project designs
Support to NI’s internal policies related to gender in the workplace
- Provide support and/or advice to senior leaders to promote gender equity within all NI’s workplaces.
- Advice HR where policies and/or practice should be updated and/or new policies developed so that NI incorporates best practice on gender equality at work in its offices overseas and in Canada.
- Lead on the implementation of the new Child Safeguarding policy by providing support to Child Safeguarding focal points; with the support of external experts as available.
Knowledge Management and Best Practice Dissemination
- Stay abreast of and contribute to the latest knowledge and best practice related to gender and nutrition.
- Prepare/ participate in briefings, web and in-person seminars to inform NI staff about new knowledge, clearly interpreting the relevance for NI programs and implications for changes in practice by NI.
- Work closely with other units, to provide guidance on how to monitor and report on gender equality.
- Analyze reports from NI programs and synthesize summary reports on NI’s work in gender and behavior change interventions for donors, NI publications and/or other stakeholders.
- As directed, and in close coordination with other units, represent NI’s work in gender externally, including creating and following through on opportunities for:
- Representation at international meetings;
- Publications and presentations;
- Policy advocacy;
- Coordination and collaboration with partners;
- Donor stewardship
Program and Financial Management
- Develop a costed annual work plan for gender.
- Monitor and performance manage sub-contractors and grantees; specification of work to be sub contracted, and the identification, selection and engagement of appropriate individuals or institutions to carry it out under NI management.
- Development of project enabling agreements with partners and stakeholders.
Financial tracking and management of all assigned project work using NI’s contracts database
Any other duties and responsibilities as may be required.
Education and Experience
- Postgraduate level degree in gender/women’s studies with a focus on health, or in nutrition, public health, or international development with experience and training in gender and development.
- 6-8 years of experience with NGOs, and/or UN agencies working in gender, public health, food security, and/or nutrition related programs with at least 5 years of experience working in developing countries in Asia and/or Africa in an advisory or program management role.
- Able to work as part of multi-cultural global team in a dynamic and growing organization.
- Strong skills in fostering collaboration among academic, public, private and other organizations.
- Experience in training and capacity building.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Superior communications skills (oral and written) including good technical writing and presentation skills.
Fluency in English - both reading and writing – is essential.
Proficiency in French is an asset
- International travel may be required to Europe, the Americas, sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia.
- Duty travel is typically for 1-3 weeks and usually for not more than 40 days per year
Other Specific Skill Requirements
- Gender Analysis and Gender Focused programming.
- Experience with qualitative research methods.
- Ability to communicate methods and research results into publishable manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience with school based delivery platforms and/or sexual and reproductive health programs is also an asset.
