On behalf of our client, German-Canadian Benevolent Society of BC, we are searching for a Director of Finance to join their team. The German-Canadian Benevolent Society of BC operates the German-Canadian Care Home and also organizes many outreach events for the German-Canadian community. The mission of the Society is to provide quality care and support for seniors in British Columbia within the catchment area of the care home under its auspices. The Society works in partnership with the staff of the German-Candian Care Home, the health authorities and the wider community to offer a continuum of support services. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Finance plans, organizes, controls and evaluates the overall operation of the Finance Department for the Society and Care Home. Through a commitment to the organization’s mission, vision and values, the Director of Finance will ensures organizational goals and objectives are met. The incumbent supervises assigned staff and administers related financial service contracts. This hands-on role will be an excellent opportunity for an individual who enjoys becoming an invested team member and takes an active interest in the people, organization and community they serve. The incumbent of this role will be a team oriented and collaborative individual who is trusted to take care of the financial health of the organization. 

 

Responsibilities:

Finance:

  • Plans, monitors, implements, controls and evaluates all areas of the finance department in a manner that promotes the mission, goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Develops, monitors, implements and evaluates policies, procedures and standards to support the finance department. Participates as a member of the management team, in the development, recommendation, implementation and evaluation of policies and administrative systems for the Care Home.
  • Develops, represents and controls the annual operating budget for the organization. Coordinates the preparation of the organization’s annual operating and capital budgets; presents these budgets to the Board of Directors for approval and regularly submits financial statements to the Board of Directors for review. Ensures financial accountability is maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, the operating agreement and applicable laws.
  • Monitors financial transactions conducted by other departments to ensure they conform to organizational standards and legislative requirements. Liaises with other departments within the facility to ensure effective and efficient use of resources.

Leadership:

  • Participates in management team activities such as policy and strategic planning, program evaluation, and union/management meetings. Makes presentations and participates at Board of Directors meetings as required.
  • Administers, evaluates and oversees related financial services contracts utilized in the delivery of financial services.
  • Develops and maintains contacts internal and external to the organization to further its goals and objectives. Facilitates effective working relationships between the organization and external contacts such as government, licensing, community partners, the public and other interested groups.

 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education with a minimum of five years experience in a financial department of a health care organization and/or non profit organization
  • CPA, or equivalent accounting designation
  • Two years recent supervisory or managerial experience in a unionized environment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and lead, supervise and motivate staff
  • Demonstrated expertise in the area of information technology systems and ability to operate related equipment
  • Communicates strategically and efficiently both written and verbally
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet required deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to participate as an active member of a proactive management team
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to speak, write or read German is an asset, but not required
