Director of Leader’s Secretariat and Tour

Full Time - Permanent


The Director of the Leader’s Secretariat and Tour, reporting to the Principal Secretary, is responsible for overseeing and implementing the strategy for the Leader’s Tour. The Director is also responsible for managing the Leader’s schedule, overseeing correspondence, and the day-to-day operations of the Leader’s office.


Co-ordinate the development and implementation of a tour strategy based on the strategic themes and priorities established by Caucus.

  • Liaise with NDP the Outreach Department to ensure a coordinated approach to communications and community outreach and tour opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Director of Community Engagement to ensure opportunities for the Leader and Caucus to build strong relationships with key community stakeholders across the province.
  • Work closely with the Principal Secretary and the Director of Communications and Strategic Planning to implement a media and communications strategy for the Leader’s Tour.
  • Function as part of the Senior Staff Team.
  • Develop a comprehensive and creative calendar for the Leader’s Tour that adheres to the Ontario NDP’s narrative and the Leader’s brand.
  • Administer the day-to-day operation of the Leader’s schedule including responding to and prioritizing invitations, as well as seeking out opportunities to profile the Leader at key community events.
  • Establish a strong profile for the Leader and Caucus in various communities across the province.
  • Provide political analysis and advice to the Leader and the Caucus Members to address issues and opportunities arising from tour events.
  • Assign duties and monitor the assignments and workload of members of the Leader’s Tour Team
  • In conjunction with the Principal Secretary hire and discipline tour unit staff when required.
  • Travel will be a key component of this position.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in event management/media event planning
  • Previous experience on NDP Leader’s Tour teams provincially, federally or equivalent experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of and experience with the Ontario NDP, it’s structures and values preferred
  • Understanding and knowledge of community organizations in Ontario and demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of communities as required on short and long-term projects
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, ability to deal with the public, ability to work under pressure, good computer and office organization skills.
  • Proven leadership and management experience.
  • Superior organizational and planning skills.
  • Must be able to produce detailed accurate work within tight timelines.
  • Enthusiasm for and availability to travel and work irregular hours including weekends is essential.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to lead projects to completion.
  • Experience in NDP organization, ethno cultural organizations or labour movement would be an asset.
