Job Purpose

  • Own, plan, oversee, and implement the food sourcing strategy for TMFB including food purchase, ReclaimFRESH, grocery stores, food drives, etc. in coordination with the Development, Programs, and Marketing teams
  • Achieve the annual targets for food by category by acquiring food from various sources, seeking out the most nutritious food available in the most efficient way. Food sources include ReclaimFRESH (TMFB’s Food Rescue program), grocery stores, corporate food donors, purchasing, partnerships with other charities, and liaising with internal teams regarding food drives

Responsibilities

Proactive Food Solicitation (45%)

  • Develop and implement a plan for food solicitation coordinated with current and prospect food and financial donors, including:
    • Targets by food category to ensure compliance with Canada’s Food Guide, lists of prospects, and specific targets for acquiring new donors, in 
    • Identifying sources of surplus food in Mississauga including food producers, wholesalers, distributors, retail grocery stores/chains, distribution centres, local growers, etc.
    • Work collaboratively with the Marketing team to develop promotional/sales materials customized to TMFB’s programs
    • Soliciting suppliers who will provide food. Approach existing and potential donors, asking for increased or new support. Ensure alignment with Development team plans and solicitations
    • Ensure optimal customer service and compliance with procedures. Write and send thank you letters, reports and/or confirmation of receipt after donation
  • Cultivate, nurture, and build positive relationships with grocery store management in order to maximize grocery store participation in ReclaimFRESH, TMFB’s Food Rescue Program. (Current participating stores = 15. Goal = add 10 each year.)
    • Develop and support participating stores, serving as key relationship manager for all grocery stores. Visit the stores to build rapport and support them technically in this project, including onboarding and training
    • Define / review / optimize food distribution processes within participating stores. Solve problematic situations with store managers and make necessary follow-ups
  • Work collaboratively with the Development and Marketing teams to coordinate internal/ external communication and effective donor stewardship
  • Make all necessary arrangements for receiving food donations

Supporting Food Donation Offers (25%)

  • Receive, respond to, and tentatively schedule pickups for all inquiries regarding food donations, requests for pick-up from grocery stores, fire stations, and other direct donors (non-food drives)
  • Liaise with Development Team for scheduling pickups/deliveries related to food drives
  • Coordinate food donations/allocations from Feed Ontario, Food Banks Canada, or other local/regional food programs

Reporting (15%)

  • Identify and define performance indicators and create dashboards to regularly report on and optimize results
  • Evaluate the present food sourcing channels on a timely basis to identify the most efficient sourcing method and to also improve the ways in which food is sourced. 
  • Produce statistical reports as scheduled and requested

Food Purchase (10%)

  • Create an annual purchasing plan in alignment with needs as identified by current inventory, typically donated foods, organizational budget, and agency needs. Maintain responsiveness as needs change throughout the year
  • Purchase food as required and according to the annual food purchase budget of the organization, developing relationships with vendors to obtain best pricing and service

Other (5%)

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a job associated with the agri-food sector or sales/fundraising 
  • Demonstrated experience and success in the sales cycle including prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, inside sales, and cold calls
  • College or university degree in a relevant specialization
  • Demonstrated experience managing an expense budget
  • Familiarity with warehouse and grocery store policies and practices such as safe food handling and disposal would be of benefit

  • Technical. Computer proficiency with strong skills in MS Office and/or Google Apps (Especially Excel/Sheets) for business; familiarity with logistics software; familiarity with CRM software. TMFB is a cloud-based, paperless environment.

Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency, and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of TMFB

  • Hold a valid driver's license and have regular access to a vehicle
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends

Role Details

Relationships:

This position reports to the Operations Manager with strong collaboration with the Development team. Outside the agency, the position primarily coordinates with donors, vendors, and grocery stores. 

Position Type:

Full-time, minimal evening and weekend work required  

Compensation: 

$44,000 - $52,000, plus:
