Mental Health and Substance Use Counsellor

Permanent, Part-Time Position - 3 days a week


The REACHING OUT TO WOMEN (ROW) program,  a collaborative effort of the Women’s Mental Health and Addictions Network,  provides trauma-informed substance use and mental health counselling to women who are considered to be at high risk or vulnerable and are accessing shelters, drop-in centres or are involved in the criminal justice system.  Working in partnership with Sistering, this part-time position focusses on providing trauma-informed mental health and substance use counselling to women using shelters and/or  drop-in centres.   The direct service responsibilities for this position include brief and longer term individual and group counseling.  There is also a capacity building component to this role which includes the provision of consultation and the delivery of training and presentations.   


The individual hired for this position will: 

  • Work at both the Jean Tweed and partnership site (Sistering)
  • Provide individual and/or group counselling
  • Develop capacity for trauma-informed counselling within agencies and across the mental health and substance use sector in the Toronto Central LHIN
  • Participate in a collaborative and team approach at partner site, at Jean Tweed and in the larger community
  • Liaise with existing supports and services for clients to promote seamless and integrated care
  • Attend regular staff meetings at the Jean Tweed office in Etobicoke



  • A Master’s degree in Social Work or a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5 years experience working with women with substance use and mental health concerns who are at risk or vulnerable
  • Excellent clinical skills including individual and group, brief and long term counselling, trauma-informed practice
  • Experience facilitating educational workshops and training to staff
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a collaborative team environment
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
