Canadian Actors' Equity Association represents professional artists including performers (actors, singers and dancers), directors, choreographers, fight directors and stage managers who are engaged in theatre, opera and dance in English Canada. 

This national Association provides support to over 6,000 members across the country.  The national office in Toronto is seeking a:


The ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR provides direct support to the Executive Director by researching and tracking issues of concern to the Association, assisting with public and media relations and participating in lobbying efforts, and preparing statistical and other reports.

Additionally, the position is responsible for initiating, implementing and/or managing various strategic initiatives and policies that enhance the Association’s services for members. 

The Associate Executive Director also works closely with the Association’s Executive Director to support the work of the Association’s elected representatives (Council) including fulfilling the role of staff support on Council committees, liaising with other staff as required, preparing various reports and ensuring effective Council/ staff communications. 

The Associate Executive Director is a management position without direct reports.  The position works closely with the senior management team, and in particularly with the Director of Communications and the Executive Assistant, in the execution of their tasks.

We are looking for someone with a passion for live performance and a minimum of five years of senior work experience within the sector.  The successful applicant will have strong facilitation and communication skills, demonstrated project management experience and direct experience working with an elected Board of representatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directly managing all aspects of assigned projects throughout their lifecycle, working in conjunction with other senior staff and other Equity stakeholders including elected Council and committee members and Association members at large;
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives and policies in furtherance of Association objectives, including municipal, provincial and federal advocacy and lobbying as appropriate;
  • Research for the preparation of and writing of briefs, reports and tabulating and maintaining statistical information required by the Association;
  • Member outreach, education and information through personal interaction, printed materials and electronic communication;
  • Working with the Communications Director in designing and editing any print and electronic documentation meant for external use by the Association or general use by staff;
  • Coordinating with the Communications Director in the development of content on the Association’s website;
  • Working with the Communications Director to maintain all government and media contacts dealing with arts and culture;
  • Identifying, researching and tracking issues of concern to the Association;
  • Public relations by representing the Association at such meetings, conferences or receptions as requested by the Executive Director;
  • Supporting the work of Council by fulfilling the role of staff support on Council committees, liaising with other staff as required regarding committee work plans, preparing various reports and ensuring effective Council/ staff communications;
  • Working with the Executive Assistant to coordinate all elections, ratifications and referenda.


  • Post secondary education.
  • A minimum of five years of senior management experience in an arts or labour organisation.
  • Excellent facilitation skills and knowledge of project management techniques.
  • Experience working with elected representatives.
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills to recognize and comprehend complex policies and legislative/ regulatory requirements and issues affecting the live performance environment.
  • Extremely strong verbal and written communication skills with highly developed skills in communications processes and technologies.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines.
  • Collaborative team player with excellent relationship management skills.
  • Flexibility, ability to adapt to change and shifting priorities.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Strong member service attitude with the ability to work in a member-driven, not-for-profit environment.
  • Strong computer skills, with competency in using intermediate/advanced features of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), the Internet and work on a data base.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.
