Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Fund Development Manager, the Major Gifts Officer is a key member of the Fund Development Team, playing a significant role as a team player with a main focus on donor development - taking the lead in securing new major gifts ($5000+) from individuals, corporations and community partners. Building and fostering collaborative relationships that are critical in supporting Rose of Sharon to achieve its mission.

 In collaboration with the Fund Development Team:

  • Help to create and execute an annual fundraising plan that meets agency financial targets (the team collectively raises $500,000+ annually) and support the short and long-term goals of the agency.
  • Develop and nurture individual, corporate and community partnerships for the purpose of securing major gifts ($5000+) and to increase public awareness of the agency.

Fund Development

  • In collaboration with the Fund Development Manager and Fund Development Team, collectively raise $500,000+ annually. Help to develop and implement fundraising plans and strategies to increase annual major gifts revenue, evaluate performance against budget and revise strategies as appropriate.
  • Lead major gift donor activities for the purpose of securing major gifts ($5,000+) including: prospect research, recruitment, conducting cultivation visits, solicitation calls, stewardship activities and recognition events.
  • Lead the development and submission of funding applications and special project proposals that support agency needs and meet donor/funding requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate donor recognition and funding requirements are identified and implemented effectively and consistently in order to build and sustain long-term positive relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Support RoS signature and 3rd party events and their related activities, as required.
  • Support direct marketing campaigns, and other annual giving funding streams including honorarium and monthly giving programs.  

Donor Relations/Communications

  • Develop major gift funder/grant reports identifying the use of funds and impact of investment as per funding requirements.
  • Develop RoS ‘good news’ major gift stories that can be shared with media and used for agency communications/social media content.
  • Support the development of communications materials as required including promotional brochure, annual report, newsletters, direct mail, program flyers, etc. adhering to agency brand standards.
  • Support the agency’s social media strategy that will:
    • Engage community in an ever-increasing manner, focused on awareness of the agency and the various ways the support can be given. 
    • Educate and invite involvement of people who would benefit from services 
    • Profile and acknowledge donors and funding partners 
    • Support campaigns and events through multi-channel media promotion

 Public Relations 

  • Expand community awareness and support revenue growth through major gift speaking engagements, serving as an agency spokesperson for presentations and events.


  • Document and maintain records of donor stewardship and event activities to ensure the donor management database is kept up to date. 
  • Support agency programs, management, volunteers and Board of Directors as required.
  • Lead projects, as appropriate
  • Perform other duties as required

 Qualifications and Strengths: 

  • Solid understanding of the evolving and competitive nature of the charitable sector.
  • Previous experience in fundraising, major gift prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship resulting in successfully securing major gifts.
  • Proficient in grant writing and have experience in successful grant submissions.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of products, expertise in using the internet as a resource tool.
  • Working knowledge of CRA donation policies and other relevant legislation.
  • Diploma, Degree or equivalent experience in Fund Development, Communications and/or Public Relations.
  • Solutions oriented with a customer service orientation and the ability to proactively identify and manage challenges.
  • Ability to represent Rose of Sharon in the community; Significant level of comfort in presenting and public speaking.
  • Able to work independently, as well as part of a team to deliver results.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Demonstrated tact, diplomacy and interpersonal skills to liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills to determine work priorities and manage multiple projects 
  • Possess strong leadership qualities, high level of professionalism, drive and discretion, with an enthusiasm and passion for delivering results
  • A flexible attitude and keen willingness to step in and help with all functions of fund development and communications.
  • A personal alignment and commitment to the Rose of Sharon mission.
  • Current vulnerable Sector Screening required
  • A valid driving license, use of a personal car and willingness to travel as required

 Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a typical office environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 30lbs occasionally
  • Some travel will be required to event venues and other meetings
  • Some weekend and evening work.
  • Must be a team player, willing to pitch in as needed beyond the confines of the job description.
