The Arab Community Centre in Toronto

(6 – 8 month contract with possibility for extension) The Arab Community Centre of Toronto was established by a group of community activists in 1972 as a multi-purpose community facility in Toronto. It was the first organization to be dedicated to social and community services serving the Arab community in the Greater Toronto Area. The need for the community center was in response to a fast-growing community with no various needs for services and social networking. The ACCT served as a first stop for many newcomers to the City of Toronto and surrounding communities. The Arab Community Centre of Toronto (ACCT) is a non-profit, non-political, non-religious organization. For over 45 years ACCT has been a cornerstone of the vibrant Arab community. A community-based, multi-purpose centre, ACCT providing a range of programs and services to all residents of the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. ACCT provides various types of social and community services.

Position Description ACCT is looking for an Interim Executive Director to provide both strategic system leadership and operational day-to-day management of ACCT. With the Board, the Interim Executive Director will play a vital role in envisioning the future role of ACCT while concurrently planning and executing the programmatic initiatives to achieve ACCT’s goals. The role duration will focus on three major priority areas:

  1. Staff team development and capacity building, establishing innovative and efficient systems and structure as ACCT transitions from the current settlement focus operational to a professionally staffed community service hub.
  2. Assess, develop and ensure operational management policies and procedures are in place to respond to the requirements and needs specified in legislation, regulations and contractual agreements.
  3. Managing and advancing relationship with current funders, partners, potential partners and the community.

Responsibilities The Interim Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of staff and operations of the organization. Accountable to the Board, this role will directly supervise a staff team responsible for working directly with individuals, groups and staff from other community-based agencies and levels of government in identifying and addressing a broad range of community issues and service needs. The Interim Executive Director is required to conduct a thorough organizational assessment from which short-term work plans are developed, implemented, and monitored, and establish priorities for design and implementation, leading staff team in a manner that fosters their commitment towards achieving organizational goals. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Interim Executive Director will maintain appropriate working relationships and regular communications with the Board of Directors, staff, funders, contractors, service clients and the community.

Position Purpose: The Interim Executive Director is a fulltime position and will provide day-to-day management as a leader working closely with the Board of Directors to The Interim Executive Director is responsible for providing highly specialized organizational leadership, delivery and measured impact of all programs, fiscal due diligence while establishing a healthy, safe, and productive work environment and positive positioning of the organization at all times with key stakeholders.

Position Duration: The Interim Executive Director position is anticipated as a 6 - 8 month commitment with a priority task to establish the organizational priorities, develop and implement sustainable systems and structures ship. The successful candidate for this position has:

  • Expertise as a fiscal manager and in establishing fundraising and stakeholder development tactics and strategies.
  • Demonstrated abilities in stewarding organizational sustainability and governance.
  • Effective skills in leading, supporting and supervising staff and volunteers.
  • Proven success in providing forward-thinking initiatives to accomplish operational objectives, which may include organizational restructuring, process re-engineering, technological enhancements, and adaptability to changing business and regulatory environments. Recommend changes/shifts in tactical direction as appropriate for transitional purposes.

We are looking for someone who, as Interim Executive Director, will bring experience and stability to:

Organizational Sustainability and Development

  • Nurture existing partnerships with key stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the Board, staff and relevant stakeholders on implementing and executing the strategic plan for desired outcomes
  • Ensure compliance with governing rules and regulations for not-for-profit
  • Support the Board of Directors and Committees to ensure fiscal management, program accountability, public engagement and alignment with vision and strategic goals

Financial Accountability

  • Be responsible for the financial integrity and sustainability of the organization
  • Execute on established strategies for core funding opportunities, potentially identify and develop new funding opportunities
  • Oversee the overall operating budget of the organization as well as program budgets and be accountable for working within budget constraints to meet needs both operationally and strategically
  • Work closely with Board and staff to ensure that fundraising targets are set and achieved and guide all grant submissions
  • Manage daily financial activities and work collaboratively with Board Treasurer and bookkeeper

Communications and Engagement

  • Represent the organization and its values within the community
  • Consult, collaborate with, and where appropriate provide updates and reports to referring and funding agencies, donors, community, partners and any other stakeholders identified.
  • Develop a strong internal communications plan to engage and motivate staff members
  • Ensure the marketing and communications of organization’s events, programs and accomplishments are visible through the website, social media, and other forms of communication.

Collaborative Leadership and Capacity Building

  • Provide leadership in achieving the organization’s strategic goals to best serve ACCT clients and communities.
  • Ability to provide organizational leadership and foster a team environment and handle multiple priorities successful.
  • Model, lead and support a collaborative values-based work environment that inspires staff, board and volunteers and fosters learning and professional growth.
  • Ensure programs and activities represent the vision, mission, and values of the organization.
  • Supervise and support staff in the provision of high-quality programs and services.
  • Consult and collaborate regularly with key stakeholders to ensure ACCT’s programs are meeting the needs of the community through measurable outcomes
  • Manage priorities thoughtfully to meet on-going strategic objectives and sustainability
  • Provide resolution to complex issues, which may have no established precedence or procedure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Non-profit Management, Social Services, or related field preferred.
  • 5 or more years of experience in a managerial or director role overseeing program budgets and staffing with proven success in collaborative leadership and staff development.
  • Experience in not-for-profit governance and administration with proven success in applying leadership and management principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in government funder relations.
  • Proven excellence and accuracy in the areas of fund development, budget preparation and oversight, and operational administration.
  • Demonstrated success with project management, program and event planning.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current settlement and integration issues, particularly those facing newcomer communities.

Assets

  • Change management skills with expertise in implementing transformational initiatives.
  • Experience in working within the settlement sector or community development space.
  • Familiarity with community services and resources in the GTA.
  • Knowledge of all management aspects of a non-profit and relationship with a Board of Directors.
  • Knowledge of federal, provincial and municipal social service delivery and funding systems, contract compliance, grant administration, fundraising, program development and evaluation, and human resources.
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislation applicable to the not-for-profit and volunteer engagement sector i.e. Not-For-Profit Act, employment standards, human rights, etc.
  • Knowledge of cultural behaviors, customs, and beliefs as determined by the community supported.
  • Arabic speaker.
