About the Role:

The YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford (YMCA) seeks a senior financial professional to join our dynamic team as Vice President of Finance and Risk. As a key member of the Executive Management team and reporting directly to the President & CEO, the successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership for the overall financial integrity of the YMCA with consolidated revenue of approximately $60 million. This includes responsibility for a staff team, financial reporting, audits, operating and capital budgets, Canadian charity obligations, taxation, forecast analysis, cash management, insurance, accounting controls, and risk management systems.

In this capacity, the Vice President will also provide financial leadership in support of the YMCA’s strategic plan, including but not limited to, the future development and evolution of YMCA facilities and associated logistical planning.

The Vice President attends Board of Directors’ meetings and works closely with members of the Executive Management team and various Board sub-committees. This individual acts as a key financial resource for all long-term planning and operational decisions and will utilize the experience and expertise to assess and look for continuous improvement with initiatives that impact the financial performance and future direction of the YMCA.

The Vice President’s demonstrated abilities will support initiatives and practices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of internal financial and accounting systems and make sound recommendations where change is desirable. The person is responsible for maintaining a reputation of integrity and transparency of all financial transactions. This includes operating in a fiscally responsible and cost-effective manner and being a proactive resource to all operating departments.

Oversight of Risk Management:

  • Identify, analyze, assess, mitigate, and monitor significant operational and other risks across the YMCA, in alignment with the National insurance program
  • Develop and maintain an effective risk management process and its procedures to support business units in identifying, assessing, and managing risk
  • Promote a risk-aware culture through regular communications and training
  • Educate and advise operational leaders on internal controls and best practices to manage risks
  • Recommend updates to policies and procedures and process changes as needed
  • Participate in compliance, regulatory, and operational projects and procedure enhancements
  • Working directly with our Insurers, monitor industry trends and best practices and recommend ways to effectively apply them at the YMCA
  • Provide senior leadership and oversight in the area of claims management and incident reporting protocols

The Candidate We Are Seeking:

  • Has a strong record of professional accomplishments overseeing all aspects of Finance and Risk.
  • 10+ years of recent, relevant and progressive management experience complemented by a university degree or equivalent education and experience in a field related to business, commerce or accounting along with a professional accounting designation;
  • An appreciation and understanding of the diverse charitable work the YMCA delivers to the communities it serves; candidates should have an understanding of regulations pertaining to donations, endowments, government grants, and the applicable reporting requirements.
  • Experience working with charitable organizations and understanding of specific not-for-profit accounting rules/sales tax regulations;
  • Candidates should have a demonstrated appetite and desire to seek continuous improvement and efficiencies with internal systems and practices; exhibit strong business and analytical acumen along with planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Proven experience collaborating with members of senior management, Board of Directors, and various Board sub-committees combined with a strong work ethic and solid communication skills, candidates should exhibit a high level of integrity, accountability, and urgency.
  • While they can act as a key strategic advisor on financial priorities, they also enjoy the hands-on operational side of the finance role and bring solid experience in areas such as cash management, financial analysis, forecasting, and operating and capital budgeting, to name a few.
  • A highly respected leader, candidate must demonstrate excellent communication skills and have a natural ability to coach and guide members of the finance team. The VP will bring a leadership style that is visible, open, engaging and transparent.

Education, Skills, & Qualifications:

  • University Degree in finance, accounting, economics, or another related field
  • CPA or other relevant professional accounting designation
  • 5+ years’ experience at a senior level managing large and diverse financial systems combined with risk management experience assessing operational risks, preferably within the charitable sector
  • Experience with an internal controls framework and adapting risk assessment methodologies
  • Ability to interpret regulatory requirements, best practices, and implement changes to risk management processes
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation skills
  • Superior problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently, think critically, and make decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with exceptional attention to detail
