Habitat Services strives to improve the quality of housing for tenants marginalized by poverty and their mental health status by contracting with landlords and providing recovery based support. Habitat Services funds and monitors 44 boarding homes and 35 apartment units at sites across the City of Toronto. The Residential Services Inspector (RSI) works as part of the Contract Monitoring Program.  The Residential Services Inspectors are responsible for monitoring and documenting contract standards in Habitat-funded homes. Residential Services Inspectors complete building/food inspections, as well as liaise with home operators, boarding home staff, tenants, on-site support services and other service providers to improve the quality of life for individuals living in homes. Residential Services Inspectors also ensure the Residential Tenancy Act is being followed and that the rights & responsibilities of the landlords/tenants are being upheld. Residential Services Inspectors chair dispute meetings with owners /operators and tenants as needed as well as documenting and investigating complaints.

Successful applicants will have:

  • Experience working in a Housing Program and/or setting
  • Experience monitoring standards through a building/food inspections process
  • Experience working with consumers/survivors of the mental health system
  • Experience negotiating and mediating in difficult circumstances
  • Related post-secondary school education or equivalent experience
  • Problem-solving skills, including ability to identify and participate in the resolution of issues/problems
  • Good knowledge of the mental health system in Toronto and understanding of the needs of consumers/survivors of the mental health system
  • Documentation, organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in partnership with other service providers and consumer/survivors to ensure problems are identified and resolved 
  • Understanding of issues related to poverty and homelessness
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act
  • Personal lived experience with the mental health system or with homelessness is an asset
  • A second language is an asset

Probationary salary for first 6 months: $40,595.00, after 6 months of hire: $43,595.00

If the contract is extended, salary increases after 2 years to: $44,574.00, after 4 years to: $45,689.00, and after 5 years to $47,517.00
