The Role

As a leading voice for the Association within the pharmacist profession, pharmacy, government and the media, the Chief Pharmacist Officer will play an active role in representing CPhA with all key health stakeholders. The Chief Pharmacist Officer will provide leadership of the Association’s professional affairs department and will actively seek to identify innovative opportunities for building awareness about the profession and how the profession can advance the health and well-being of Canadians.

This is a permanent executive leadership position and part of the CPhA Senior Management Team, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer.

Key Accountabilities

  • Leadership: Lead the Professional Affairs Department in its three key areas of responsibility, those being education, research and professional advancement.
  • Advisor: Provide ongoing advice to the CPhA’s Senior Management Team on key areas affecting the advancement of the profession and on emerging trends/issues within both the pharmacy and greater health care community and recommend necessary actions.
  • Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to lead education, practice advancement and research enabling pharmacists to consistently utilize the full extent of their knowledge and skills in providing health care.
  • Leveraging Opportunities: Assess key government health priorities for opportunities, challenges and impact on the profession, and collaborate with CPhA staff to engage said initiatives for improved patient care and pharmacist advancement.
  • Collaboration: Engage Organizational Members to coordinate practice advancement for better patient care at a federal and pan-provincial level.
  • Relationship Building: Develop relationships with key leaders in the health care community and specifically foster relationships within the pharmacy education, regulation and research communities in Canada through personal contact and participation in workshops and the facilitation of gatherings of these communities.
  • Representation: Represent the profession in Canada with key audiences (media, members, government, health stakeholders, etc.).
  • Partnerships: Assist in identifying and fostering partnering opportunities that will leverage CPhA’s content, resources and expertise.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy; a PharmD or an advanced degree desirable.
  • Current license to practice in a Canadian jurisdiction, and in good standing.

Experience

  • Pharmacist with relevant practice experience within the last 3 years.
  • Sound understanding of practice-based research and professional education development; experience preferred.
  • A well-rounded understanding of the variety of practice settings for pharmacists across Canada.
  • Comprehensive experience (7 years +) in either front-line practice, practice research and/or academia.
  • 7 years + progressive leadership and management experience within a health care environment.
  • Media relations and government relation experience.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness communicating with the pharmacy and health care community.
  • Excellent organizational skills and communications skills, both verbal and written, including presenting in an articulate, convincing and diplomatic manner.
  • Critical appraisal skills and sound research knowledge.
  • Effective listening skills, receptive to new ideas, flexibility and maturity necessary to play leadership role amongst the senior management.
  • Integrative, holistic thinking of the business, the stakeholders’ needs (both internal and external), program and service offerings and delivery.
  • Proven track record of successful relationships with opinion leaders, subject matter experts and researchers.
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is preferred.

  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Ability to build and maintain a high-performance team and to work co-operatively with the team and across the organization to achieve group and organizational goals.
  • Client/Public Service Orientation: Ability to advocate on behalf of the needs of a diverse community and to focus one’s efforts on discovering and meeting both the members’ needs and the health needs of the public; ensuring that CPhA’s strategic direction and service delivery is sensitive to those needs.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
