The following Temporary Full-time (contract between 12 and 24 months) position is available and applications are invited:

Health Services Nurse

Location: 30 Isabella Street & 20 De Boers Drive

Salary Range: $77,082 to $93,564

PURPOSE:

The Health Services Nurse provides nursing assessment and interventions for infants, children and youth in a community based setting as well as provide professional nursing care in any of the Society’s medical clinics as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conducts nursing assessments that may include physical assessment, obtaining health
    history from client and/or parents or worker with the ability to triage according to priority,
    and review of files.
  2. Functions in the role of an infant nurse specialist when providing coverage in Infant Nurse Specialist Programme.
  • Visits infant and family in home environment to assess the physical condition of the infant, the caretaking skills of the parent, and secures information from sources such as the family doctor, hospital, public health, etc. to clarify the situation.
  • Reviews and evaluates information obtained and assesses family’s capacities to care adequately for infant.
  1. Functions in the role of clinic nurse when providing nursing coverage in medical clinics.
  • Performs prescribed nursing procedures such as: ear syringing, dressing changes, suture/staple removal; immunizations, dispense prescribed medications; can work under medical directives in absence of physician;
  • Assists Physician with basic nursing care and procedures;
  • Prepares medical summaries for adopted and discharged children/youth;
  • Orders and maintains clinic supplies.
  1. Provides child protection workers with information regarding physical assessments of infants, and environmental assessment for children and youth in other settings such as foster homes, group homes, etc. to assess if medical protocols and physical environment are adequate to meet the needs of the child/youth and to identify teaching and resources needed for the caregivers
  2. Attends client focused meetings such as case planning to present and discuss cases and liaises with other professionals and community Agencies as required. May also attend abuse conference reviews to provide medical perspective.
  3. Completes documentation as required fulfilling expectations of the Society, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), and any relevant legislation.
  4. Provides consultation to staff, resource families, caregivers and clients re: health issues (including mental health issues), medications prescribed by community physicians, management of abnormal behaviours (e.g. feeding and sleeping patterns.); application of relevant legislation as it applies to consent to treatment and administration of psychotropic medication.
  5. Provides training to workers and resource families both formally and informally.
  6. Works in a safe manner in accordance with the Society’s health and safety policies and procedures and all relevant legislation.
  7. Acts in accordance with and incorporates Society's Code of Ethics, Confidentiality, Anti- Oppression/Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination policies, etc.
  8. Uses sound judgment in consideration of financial resources.
  9. Complies with Society’s financial policies and procedures.
  10. Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

  • Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario; AND
  • A minimum of 3 years of nursing experience in a hospital, community or public health setting with paediatric, emergency, or outpatient clinic experience

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Requirements:

  • Current CPR certification
  • Valid Ontario G or G2 Driver’s License
  • Access to a vehicle for Agency work

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide on-going patient care.
  • Demonstrated clinical nursing skills with advanced assessment skills. Working knowledge of community health nursing theory including mental health and addictions, communicable diseases and practice within a client/family-centered approach.
  • Demonstrated case management, teaching/training, clinical support and consultation skills.
  • Applied knowledge of infant/child/youth growth and development including mental health
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise reports/documentation that reflect CNO standards and legislative requirements as well as agency policies and standards
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Competence in problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Proven ability to handle crises in a calm manner
  • Proven ability to work co-operatively within a team setting, as well as the ability to elicit co-operation from others
  • Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients and caregivers
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proven ability in using computer software, databases, and service systems
  • Experience working in a child welfare health services setting, preferred
  • Knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act and its mandate, an asset
  • Proficiency in a second language, an asset
