Digital Marketing & Communications Manager

International Development and Relief Foundation (IDRF) is a registered Canadian charitable organization, dedicated to empowering the disadvantaged people of the word, without discrimination, based on the Islamic principles of social justice, self-reliance and human dignity.  Since 1984 IDRF has been implementing humanitarian relief and development projects in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the Americas. 

The Digital Marketing & Communications Manager will be responsible for overseeing all content development and strategic planning activities. The position will be based at IDRF’s headquarters in Toronto.  Primary duties include:

Content Development:

  • Promote IDRF’s humanitarian and sustainable development programs in both in Canada and abroad, using effective marketing and promotional tools;
  • Develop and share information with a keen sense of newsworthiness and understanding of how to market the organizations' achievements to a broad audience, as well its donor base;
  • Write original content and programs on a variety of digital platforms, including idrf.com; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, annual reports and E-Bulletins;
  • Interview both beneficiaries of IDRF’s work and overseas project partners to produce case studies and other original content;
  • Own all brand approval for content and digital campaigns.

Strategic Planning:

  • Deep understanding of the organization's programming, fundraising, communications and advocacy objectives;
  • Incorporate and balance the objectives of all departments to oversee the production of the organizations' presence in the digital space;
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to coordinate and oversee media content collection, production, and distribution;
  • Create strategic communication plans (from research through measurement/evaluation) and design specific content strategies to meet organizational objectives;
  • Craft editorial and content calendars for re-purposing stories across platforms;
  • Develop digital and social media presence;
  • Develop and execute key messages and objectives for fundraising campaigns;

Technical Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree in Communications, Development Studies, or a related field. The equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in communications, including the development of core messaging, digital media content and media pieces within international development and humanitarian aid.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to write high quality, compelling copy for various mediums and audiences and the ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • General understanding of media outreach and how to maximize exposure to public audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize priorities, multi-task, take initiative and work independently.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of social media tools. Specifically, hands-on expert understanding of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, including analytics to guide social media planning.
  • Storyboarding experience; understanding the effectiveness and appropriateness of story assets (text, images, audio, video) and how to combine them.
  • Visual, audio and video content creation experience; knowledge of best practices.
  • Working knowledge of intermediate- to advanced-level equipment (DSLR camera, video, audio recorder, microphones).
  • Comfort and experience using editing software (image, audio and video, post-production).
  • Ability to design and maintain a story bank (using a database or other software/hardware solutions).
  • Expertise with online platforms: content management systems for web, e-newsletter services, and social media.
  • Experience using web analytics and social media monitoring/measurement tools.
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience using Google Analytics, MailChimp, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Ability to liaise with IDRF project partners both abroad and within Canada.
  • Ability to build relationships with communications professionals across the sector.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
