In this exciting period of growth and evolution, Centennial is seeking a collaborative academic leader to serve as its Chair, Department of Child and Family Studies, part of the School of Community and Health Studies (SCHS). Centennial’s SCHS offers state-of-the-art labs and clinics in support of several innovative, tech-enabled programs. The School serves approximately 6,400 students, offering 30 full-time programs and dozens of part-time and full-time child education learning opportunities. Centennial College operates two exceptional, quality child-care centres as an integral part of SCHS’s Child Studies program. These centres are licensed by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services and are open to the public and to the children of students, teachers and staff at Centennial College.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Community and Health Studies, the Chair, Department of Child and Family Studies leads the College’s child-care centres and provides academic and administrative leadership, supervision and direction to the faculty, managers, support staff and students in the Department of Child and Family Studies and SCHS Early Learning Centres. The Chair provides leadership in the planning, development and delivery of a related cluster of courses and programs (certificate, diploma, advanced diploma and continuing education programs) offered in both full-time and part-time formats by the School.

The Chair is accountable for the planning, development, delivery and ongoing review including external program approval and licensing requirement processes of the full-time post-secondary and post-diploma programs and services, ensuring that the programs are relevant to the needs of college, students, its employers, and the community at large and are consistent with the College’s and School’s strategic directions. The Chair provides administrative and supervisory oversight of the School’s Early Learning Centres and ancillary revenue operations.   

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of three years of experience working in an Early Childhood Learning Centre, with leadership experience in a Centre preferred, and will have a Masters degree in a relevant discipline, such as Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Child and Youth Study, etc. A Ph.D. would be considered an asset, as would a certification for Early Childhood Education (ECE or RECE).

The Chair is a collaborative decision-maker with strong advocacy and negotiation skills and a keen eye for collaborative decision-making. The role requires a high degree of emotional intelligence, demonstrated leadership, empathy, and experience leading and consulting teams through change. The ideal candidate can inspire support and create opportunities for faculty to be creative and innovative, and the ideal candidate is familiar with how to bring people together in academic and unionized environments, during times of complex change.
