Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director will be responsible for the oversight and implementation of fundraising and communication initiatives that support EcoSchools’ strategic objectives. This will be an excellent opportunity to make your mark in developing the fundraising portfolio, including strategy, forecasting, and execution, in collaboration with a passionate and talented team.
As part of the senior leadership team, the Development Director will focus on fundraising and collaborate on overall partnership development, community engagement, and reporting. The ideal candidate is committed to mission-driven organizations and demonstrates a strong track record of fundraising success, change management, and stakeholder relations. The Development Director will be responsible for working with the staff team to achieve realistic stretch financial targets with a year-over-year growth orientation.

- Lead the development and implementation of a long-term fundraising strategy.
- Develop, manage, and further diversify EcoSchools’ portfolio of corporate funders, foundations, and individual donors.
- Collaborate with senior leadership on the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of funders.
- Support relationship-building while strategically and thoughtfully moving supporters through all stages of the donor cycle.
- Contribute to budget development through analysis and forecasting.
- Develop annual business plans in collaboration with the senior leadership to meet revenue targets.
- Provide ongoing feedback to the leadership team related to fundraising deliverables and support the creation of reports.
- Write grant applications and funding proposals in collaboration with department leads.
- Support and develop systems to ensure the fulfillment of all contractual obligations with funders, in collaboration with the leadership team.
- Provide recommendations for program innovation and development based on sponsor feedback and trends in environmental education and the nonprofit sector.
- Provide senior management oversight to the Communications Manager.
- Manage the implementation and evaluation of annual communications and marketing plans that include key strategies, tactics, key performance indicators, and timelines.
- Stay current with trends in communications and marketing, and implement new and innovative methods for public engagement.
- Support the growth and development of staff through coaching, feedback, training, and evaluation.
- Ensure fulfillment of all communications-related contractual obligations with funders.
- Manage the communications operating budget, including regular reporting on actuals and projections.
- Act as a senior liaison for media and public relations.
- Maintain and elevate the EcoSchools brand and visual identity.
- University degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5-7 years of relevant professional experience, with a minimum of 2 years in a management role, and a proven track record of successful corporate and major gifts fundraising.
- Personal connection and commitment to EcoSchools’ environmental and youth leadership goals.
- Solid understanding of various content channels (video, blogs, social, etc.) and how to create the most impact and engagement
- Experience working within the nonprofit sector at a provincial, national, or international level.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to engage and inspire others.
- Experience building and meeting targets established in budgets.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment that requires flexibility and the ability to pivot.
- Excellent written, public speaking, facilitation, and relationship management skills.
- Outstanding organizational and report writing skills.
- Resourcefulness and initiative to function collaboratively as part of a small team.
- Ability to travel as needed, with appropriate notice.
- Ability to work non‐traditional hours as needed to support events and engage donors and partners.
- Proficiency in Google Suite programs, CRM systems, and Microsoft Office.
- Results-driven work ethic and a good sense of humour.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license.
- Fluency in French
- Experience working with Salesforce, Wordpress, Drupal, Google Analytics, and/or Adobe Creative applications
- Access to a vehicle
