Accountant / Bookkeeper, part-time

Key responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Treasurer and Board of Directors, the part-time Accountant / Bookkeeper maintains and reports on all financial operations of Har El, the North Shore Centre for Jewish Life.

This includes full cycle bookkeeping and accounting, financial reporting, payroll and mandatory provincial and federal filings. The Centre’s operations in addition to managing synagogue memberships include a Daycare, Sunday school, and ongoing and event-based facility rentals. This position involves substantial interface with community members, vendors and other stakeholders.

Position specifics:

  • A/R and A/P posting and reconciliations in Sage 50 accounting and our CRM.
  • Bank and credit process and related reconciliations.
  • Vendor payments, invoicing and in-house payroll (~12 people).
  • Budget support, periodic and ad hoc reporting on variance, cash and overall financial position, donation and membership pledge tracking.
  • Mandatory filings including GST, CRA, WCB, etc.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Bookkeeper certification (CPB/RPB) or ideally a CA
  • At least 10 years of demonstrated book-keeping/accounting for charitable societies
    • Includes full-cycle coverage, cash to reporting, payroll, and taxes
  • Demonstrated experience with CRM software, ideally in the not-for-profit space; experience with synagogue-specific software an extra plus.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Sage 50
  • Knowledge of, comfort with and/or willingness to learn relevant Jewish events/practices’ impact on membership data and engagement
  • Supervisory experience and skill in establishing & maintaining robust financial process with non-financial staff
  • Positive, calm and collaborative approach with desire to build productive relationships in an inclusive, welcoming environment.

This position is part-time, with the possibility to build a flexible schedule of up to 30 hours per week. Our preference is for availability each weekday. Did we mention on-site daycare?
