Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chair, School of Health Sciences, the Professor will be responsible for providing academic leadership in the classroom and within the School of Opticianry, ensuring an effective and compelling learning environment for students.


Program Area/Level:

Responsible for teaching courses within the Opticianry diploma program.



Under the direction of the senior academic officer of the College or designate, the Professor is responsible for:



  • Ensuring student awareness of course objectives, approach and evaluation
  • Carrying out regularly scheduled instruction, which may include tutoring and academic counselling of
    • Providing a learning environment which makes effective use of available resources, work experience and field
  • Evaluating student progress/achievement and assuming responsibility for the overall assessment of the student's work within assigned


Course and Curriculum Development:

  • Consulting with program and course directors and other faculty members, advisory committees, accrediting agencies, potential employers and
    • Defining course objectives and evaluating and validating these
    • Specifying or approving learning approaches, necessary resources,
    • Developing individualized instruction and multi-media presentations where applicable.
    • Selecting or approving textbooks and learning


Academic Leadership:

  • Providing guidance to Instructors relative to the Instructors' teaching
  • Participating in the work of curriculum and other consultative committees as





  • Minimum of a completed BSc or B.Ed in a related field of
  • Licensed Optician in good


  • Minimum five (5) years’ teaching experience at the post-secondary level is
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience working as an


  • An established network of industry professionals that can enhance the learning experience of students through joint projects.
  • Excellent presentation, communication and human relation skills to interact effectively with the College’s multi-cultural student and staff population, and has an understanding of and commitment to equity in education.
  • Demonstrated leadership, computer, and organizational skills, motivation and a willingness to innovate and apply new teaching techniques and technologies are also required.
