The title

The Ottawa Food Bank is a respected charity with deep roots in the Ottawa community. We raise food and funds to support the 37,542 people who need emergency food every month. Working in partnership with 114 member agencies, we provide food and programming through community food banks, meal programs, Kickstart After 4 programs and our Community Harvest Farm program in an effort to support our vision of healthy, accessible, and sustainable food for all.  

We are looking for a driven and innovative person to take on the role of Director of Operations for the Ottawa Food Bank.  The successful candidate will be focused, self-directed and have proven leadership skills.  If you have experience in a warehouse and distribution environment, fit the above characteristics, and have a passion for our vision and mission, then you may be the person we are looking for.


Under the direct supervision of the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Operations provides strategic leadership to the food collection, warehouse, and distribution operations of the Ottawa Food Bank, and assists with other activities of the organization, as required.


The Director of Operations has the responsibility and oversight of the warehouse, purchased and donated food, transportation, health & safety, and building maintenance and repair.

The Director of Operations is responsible for effective and successful management of all operations in order to meet our strategic goals and participates as part of the Executive Management Team.

Strategic Direction

  • In conjunction with the CEO and the Ottawa Food Bank executive team, the Director of Operations oversees the operational requirements with regards to the collection, storage, and distribution of all products, in order to meet goals that support the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Creates processes and operations that align with the Ottawa Food Bank ’s strategic plan and measurably addresses the issue of food security.
  • Seeks out collaborative partnerships and opportunities to help the Ottawa Food Bank achieve its strategic goals and direction.

General Management and Financial Management

  • Leads the development of an annual department plan and prepares and manages department budget.
  • Supports the organization’s performance management process, including supporting the creation of development plans for operations staff to build core competencies and the timely completion of annual performance reviews.
  • Creates an environment that fosters and develops effective working relationships, encourages a high level of performance and productivity.
  • Oversees the Manager of Operations to ensure daily functions are completed in a safe, timely manner with special considerations to customer service and food safety.
  • Plans and organizes the activities and service objectives of the operations staff to achieve the most effective utilization of resources.
  • Supports the organization’s fundraising efforts through consistent contact with donors of time, money, and product. Ensures a commitment to a donor-centered approach with high customer service and appreciation.
  • Performs other management duties as assigned.

 Warehouse Management

  • Ensures all safety standards are being followed and that equipment is being operated safely.
  • Oversees the daily shipping/receiving functions of the warehouse.
  • Ensures food is received and safely stored in the warehouse while maintaining food safety standards.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of purchased and donated food items.
  • Oversees food ordering and inventory management systems including Blue Link and Food Net.
  • Coordinates shipments through the Food Banks Canada and Feed Ontario National Food Share (NFSS) program.
  • With the support of the Volunteer Coordinator and the operations team, oversees the efficient sorting of donated food and food received through the reclamation process.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of warehouse equipment such as jiggers/forklifts and food coolers/ freezers.
  • Ensures that waste management and recycling are performed in a timely and cost-effective manner.


  • Ensures the safe operation of the Ottawa Food Bank’s vehicle fleet including overseeing the use of routing software and driver performance according to MTO’s Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registry guidelines.
  • Ensures efficient and cost-effective delivery and pickups of food.
  • Oversees regular and preventative maintenance of the Ottawa Food Bank fleet.

Health and Safety

  • Promotes a safe and healthy workplace by ensuring adherence to Health and Safety legislation and policies.
  • Ensures all staff receive up to date health and safety training.
  • Conducts incident investigations as necessary.

Building maintenance and repair

  • With the support of the Manager, Operations and the Office Coordinator, oversees the maintenance and repair of the Ottawa Food Bank facility.
  • Develops a preventative maintenance program for the facility.
  • Maintains an inventory of Ottawa Food Bank assets such as office furniture and equipment.

Food Distribution and Reporting

  • Manages food inventory, including purchased and donated food.
  • Oversees detailed reporting on food distribution, including purchased and donated food.
  • Manages the Ottawa Food Bank’s food recall process.
  • Works collaboratively with the Ottawa Food Bank’s fundraising team to provide reports to food donors or partners.

Risk Management

  • Works collaboratively with the organization’s executive team to mitigate risks identified in the Risk Management Plan.


  • General familiarity with food distribution, inventory tracking systems, and office applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience with Blue Link, OmniTracs specifically considered highly valuable.
  • Highly organized and self-directed, with demonstrated skills to establish and manage priorities.
  • Strong leadership skills and the proven ability to coach and develop a team.
  • Highly developed ability to work within a team setting, and with diverse stakeholders.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including presentation/public speaking skills.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills – with a high degree of attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated high degree of maturity, reliability, good judgment, tact, and discretion, when dealing with confidential or sensitive information.
  • Ideal candidate should be ambitious and performance oriented – with a proven ability to find creative solutions to challenges.
  • Valid G Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract.
  • Current police background check may be required.


Undergraduate degree or college diploma in a relevant field, or equivalent experience. Certificate in logistics/supply chain management and Safe Food Handling Certificate is an asset. LEAN training/experience also considered an asset.


Minimum of 5-8 years of experience managing food distribution operations, including at least 2-3 years of experience in a management position.  Must have experience managing complex teams and competing priorities.


The work requires regular and ongoing contact with other employees, and external contacts, including suppliers, partner food bank program, vendors, corporate and individual food donors, volunteers, the general public, and government representatives.


Initiative and good judgment are required to ensure uninterrupted operations and a high degree of service to member agencies at all times.  Decisions of various kinds must be made in the absence of the Chief Executive Officer, and problems of an urgent or routine nature must be resolved in the day-to-day operations.  Duties involving confidential matters always require the use of discretion (e.g., human resources information, donor information, occasional client drop ins etc.)


Supervises, supports, coaches and provides performance feedback to the Manager of Operations and broader Operations team.


Errors in judgment when carrying out operational duties or enforcing health and safety standards may result in significant risk to food distribution operations and/or the Ottawa Food Bank’s public image.


The work is performed in a warehouse/office environment. The incumbent is not normally required to travel outside the National Capital Region. Occasionally this role will need to work evenings and weekends.


The work is varied and stressful at times.  There are frequent interruptions. Visual stress occurs when using a personal computer for long periods of time. Walking (e.g. in the warehouse, outside, around the perimeter of the building), climbing (e.g. in and out of trucks), bending and lifting is required on a daily basis.


Excellent English language skills (verbal and written) are a requirement of the position.  Intermediate French language skills (verbal) are an asset, but not required.
