Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA) mobilizes volunteers and communities to help working, lower income families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. With the help of volunteers, donors, and community partners; we have built close to 400 homes for families, including over 1,300 children in need of safe, decent, and affordable housing. In support of our homebuilding, Habitat GTA operates retail home improvement stores called ReStores which collect donations of home furnishings, appliances, and renovation materials and sells them to the public with all proceeds helping us build more homes.   Habitat GTA is growing.  We are an innovative, entrepreneurial social enterprise that has been increasing our capacity for impact each and every year.

The Opportunity

As an ambassador for Habitat GTA, this role is integral in creating a safe, fun, and professional environment for all of our build site volunteers.  This role is ideal for an outgoing, energetic person who thrives in a customer service focused environment, committed to excellence as it relates to ensuring a meaningful experience for all of our daily build site participants.  The incumbent must be flexible and adaptable to travel between our multiple active build sites located within the Brampton/Caledon, Toronto and York Regions.

A strong relationship builder, the candidate will interact regularly with a multifunctional and diverse group including construction staff, crew leaders, home owners, corporate groups and other volunteers. 

Your Impact

  • Work collaboratively across a variety of internal and external stakeholders to develop strategies to ensure a positive experience for groups and individuals at our build sites
  • Act as a Habitat GTA ambassador being the main point of contact to provide excellent and consistent customer service for all volunteers including those participating in the Habitat Build Day Program
  • Manage the coordination of volunteers and Crew Leaders to ensure resources are in place for the successful completion of all scheduled tasks at each of our active build sites
  • Work closely with the Site Supervisor to help assign and manage daily volunteer tasks
  • Maintain a professional, well-run build site that includes: organized build site office, personal protective equipment (PPE) kept organized and up to date, compliance with all Habitat GTA health & safety policies, refreshments for volunteers kept organized and replenished, and up to date volunteer boards,
  • Lead on execution for day to day activities regarding the Crew & Crew Leader Program including recruitment, hosting information sessions, attending external sessions, and promotion of volunteers into these programs
  • Outreach to form partnerships (volunteers, food vendors, etc.) in the surrounding community
  • Maintain organized and up to date records in a professional manner (waivers, daily site logs, volunteer surveys, family partner profiles, v-hub records, manuals, etc.)
  • Assist in the development of recruitment campaigns including the search for Crew & Crew Leaders through information sessions, external events, presentations, etc.
  • Reach out to established volunteers and seek new volunteers using various marketing tools, including volunteer databases, e-mail letters, and local community outreach
  • Facilitate the flow of communication (through email, phone, and in-person interviews) between volunteers, co-ops, and Crew/Crew Leaders and the Build Site personnel with the rest of the organization
  • Organize Crew Leader training facilitated by external organizations, ensure up to date tickets and track accordingly
  • Complete regular reports and attend team meetings across multidisciplinary teams, providing timely and constructive feedback to continuously improve the volunteer experience
  • Actively engage and educate volunteers regarding Habitat GTA’s Partner Family program and provide referrals to other team members as appropriate

What You Bring

  • A combination of experience and post-Secondary education in events, construction, volunteer management and/or business
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with Habitat GTA staff volunteers and other stakeholders in a professional and friendly manner, demonstrating tact and diplomacy at all times
  • A positive can-do attitude; you are adaptable and a self-starter who can work autonomously with minimal manager supervision
  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service; always looking for continuous improvement in providing the best experience for an audience of diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment and also work independently while managing competing priorities
  • Excellent research, organizational and time management skills
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills are required; previous experience with Flickr, Raiser’s Edge, and Volunteer Hub are considered an asset
  • Previous experience with construction environment (exposure to process, phases, etc.) and/or recruiting, training and scheduling are considered to be an asset
  • Previous Team building / event coordination experience is also an asset
  • Understanding of Habitat GTA philosophy and the desire to promote it in a manner that is consistent with our code of conduct and guiding principles
  • Certification in standard First Aid with CPR level A
  • A Valid Driver’s License and a clear driver’s abstract required, with access to own vehicle
  • Available for a flexible work schedule that includes work on occasional evenings or weekends
