The BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) is a provincially networked organization with a mandate to develop, help implement, and evaluate evidence-based approaches to substance use and addiction. BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) seeks to improve the integration of best practices and care across the continuum of substance use through the collaborative development of evidence-based policies, guidelines, and standards. With the support of the Province of BC, BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) aims to transform substance use policies and care by translating research into education and care guidance, thereby serving all British Columbians.

Summary: Drug checking is an evidence-based approach to harm reduction that helps people who use drugs find out what is actually in the substance they intend to consume. The Drug Checking Operational Technician utilizes different technologies to perform drug checking services at various sites, mainly overdose prevention sites across the Lower Mainland and at music festivals across the province. As a Drug Checking Operational Technician, you will have the opportunity to help address the opioid overdose crisis through the first provincial drug checking program in Canada – at overdose prevention sites, music festivals, and other events across the province  The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to work on the front-lines of the opioid overdose crisis in a stimulating and valuable role as a part of a provincially-connected likeminded team.


  • Operate a Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer and perform fentanyl immunoassay strips to determine the components of drug samples
  • Communicate drug checking results to clients in a respectful, non-judgmental, and professional manner
  • Meticulously record drug checking data
  • Follow protocols for data collection, device storage and transportation, and collection of samples for confirmatory testing


  • Strong awareness of harm reduction
  • Demonstrated ability to work with marginalized populations
  • Excellent ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but able to collaborate in a larger team environment
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems
  • Willingness to learn about drugs, their effects, and safer drug use
  • Candidates with a technical or science background preferred
