Purpose of the Position:

CIFAR’s Knowledge Mobilization (KM) group connects CIFAR’s research programs to global thought leaders outside of academia in order to enrich the research process and shape emerging policies and practices. In support of the Senior Director, Knowledge Mobilization, the interim KM Officer, Health & Society, helps to develop initiatives that support the engagement between CIFAR research programs and key stakeholders primarily in the health and international development sectors. Through this role, the KM Officer develops intelligence on these sectors and relevant communities to ensure engagements are mutually beneficial across research and practice. They also support the stewardship of existing and development of new stakeholder relationships, and act as a representative of the Institute at external engagements. The KM Officer also supports the department in performance measurement and evaluation to ensure the impact of KM engagements are effectively tracked, assessed and reported on. 


Provides support for the development of KM plans and delivery of associated knowledge mobilization engagements for CIFAR research programs:

  • Performs stakeholder mapping to understand key stakeholder communities including major players (e.g. relevant knowledge users and potential partners), issues, gaps in knowledge and channels for knowledge sharing and networking.
  • Supports the identification of new knowledge mobilization engagement opportunities that align with a program’s five-year KM plan.
  • Leads the development of content and copy for materials related to knowledge mobilization engagement activities.
  • Liaises with CIFAR staff and engagement partners to coordinate logistics and other planning activities related to knowledge mobilization activities.
  • Maintains up to date information on prospective and current knowledge users and partners
  • Drafts, edits and/or commissions written materials such as event briefs, event reports, and policy briefs.

Provides departmental and institutional support related to performance measurement, tracking and reporting of KM indicators:

  • Develops surveys for upcoming knowledge mobilization activities, analyzes survey data and prepares reports for internal and external use.
  • Liaises with knowledge users to better understand long term impact of knowledge mobilization activities and develops narratives of impact, where relevant.
  • Develops reports from Salesforce and other data sources to track and report on key knowledge mobilization performance indicators.
  • Performs other duties as required and provides support for other Institute initiatives as assigned.


Education/Experience required:

  • A degree in health or social sciences, with three years knowledge mobilization/translation experience.
  • Experience in a research setting and in facilitating stakeholder engagement opportunities.

Core Professional/Technical Knowledge & Skills required for the position:

  • Thorough understanding of knowledge mobilization/translation principles.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas and findings in a way that can be easily understood.
  • Strong project management, planning and execution skills to complete assigned tasks within prescribed resources and time, and problem solve when conflicts arise.
  • Knowledge of academia and the research process.
  • Experience with metrics and evaluation techniques and methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to confidently liaise with external stakeholders.
  • Data management and statistical skills, with demonstrated competence with a variety of current office software/technologies (e.g. Salesforce).
  • Knowledge of CIFAR’s role, mandate and programs to provide support to CIFAR’s research portfolio.
  • Analysis and problem solving: to review complex scientific information, extract the most pertinent information; to identify where efficiencies can be made in our internal and external practices, and to identify and resolve issues/problems as they arise.
  • Project management: to develop, plan and execute activities and initiatives; to ensure tasks and projects are completed on time; to be flexible and respond to changing priorities.
  • Communications: to develop a variety of written materials with clarity and attention to detail for both internal and external use; to serve as an active member of the KM team in internal meetings; to serve as an ambassador to the department in cross-functional teams where relevant.
  • Relationship management: to work collaboratively and effectively as a member of the department and in cross-functional project teams and standing committees, being open to new ideas, facilitating interactions to work toward consensus, and treating others with respect; to engage professionally with external stakeholders at KM engagements.

Position reports to: Senior Director, Knowledge Mobilization

Term of position: 12 months with possibility of extension
