Labor Relations Officer (LRO) position

The Association of Part-Time Professors of the University of Ottawa (APTPUO) invites applications for the position of Labor Relations Officer (LRO). APTPUO is the Certified Bargaining Agent for 2500 members who are contractual teaching staff for the University of Ottawa.

We currently have an opening for a motivated, highly organized and capable individual to work as Labor Relations Officer (Full Time Regular) within our team.

In this role, the successful applicant will work closely with the Administrative Director, the two grievance officers and the President of the APTPUO to develop effective labor relations and defend members right.

Primary duties and responsibilities

Under the direction of the Administrative Director, the duties of the LRO will be the following:

  • Provides consultative services to the membership in matters related to the interpretation and application of the Collective Agreement;
  • In collaboration with colleagues, investigates workplace issues and develops strategies to effectively address labour disputes and problems;
  • Co-ordinates with the grievance officers to provide consistent and effective labour relations representation and advice to members;
  • Represents the Association and members in consultation and recourse processes with the Employer, including grievance processes;
  • Thoroughly documents issues and grievance files and prepares cases for arbitration;
  • Conducts research for labour issues and grievance files based on past practice and resolutions, as well as legal precedents and other legal reference points;
  • Develops and delivers member education programs in accordance with the Association’s member education plan;
  • Provides research and analysis and related support to effectively assist the Bargaining Committee;
  • Prepares written materials for the newsletter, workshop and website as requested;
  • Other duties as assigned;

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary graduate in labour relations, political science, social sciences, law, legislative studies or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in grievance or adjudication processes, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to union principles and social justice.
  • Knowledge of broader Labour movement and social justice issues.
  • Ability to analyze, apply, explain, and interpret collective agreements, employment legislation, and employer policies and directives.
  • Ability to design and facilitate union education courses.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in both official languages with workers in a variety of occupations and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated strong judgment, problem-solving, conflict resolution, teamwork and leadership skills, often under circumstances that are stressful, politically and personally sensitive,
  • Ability to use computer-based technology including Microsoft, internet, email, and various software applications.

Conditions and benefits

  • Reporting to: the Administrative Director
  • Status: 35hrs/week, permanent. Includes a six-month probation period.
  • Starting compensation: $65,000 to $72,000 per year
  • Health spending account and pension benefits
  • 3 weeks of vacation per year on the first year.
  • Start Date: as soon as possible
