Job Description

What we are looking for:

You are an experienced and multi-skilled tradesperson with a unique mix of technical expertise, mentorship experience, and empathy necessary to lead a crew of marginalized pre-apprentices. You have a strong work ethic, love being part of a community of likeminded individuals, and are willing and able to manage a variety of renovation projects.

Who are we?

We are Building Up. We are a registered pre-apprenticeship program and non-profit contractor that is renovating/building affordable housing while training and employing individuals with barriers to employment to carry out that work.

Job Description:

To manage and oversee the completion of renovation projects. You will act as the foreman to guide, motivate and supervise a crew of trainees through a series of renovations. You will ensure high quality work is delivered wherever we are working. You will oversee framing work, tilling, drywall, trim and other aspects of a renovation. You will respond to both technical and interpersonal issues, and you will do everything in your power to create opportunities for trainees to build skills and experience in the trades. This is a full-time hourly position.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Act as site supervisor for renovation projects
  • Establish work schedules and procedures, and plan out daily activities for the crew.
  • Mentor trainees and instil an environment of punctuality, respect, and teamwork.
  • Maintain records of work and time sheets.
  • Liaise with subcontractors as needed.
  • Provide take-offs for construction materials as required

Example Projects:

Affordable Housing Renovation: Renovate the entire interior of a abandoned home that is being upgraded and transformed into affordable housing. May include framing, drywall, insulation, flooring, tiling, kitchen and bathroom installs, etc.

Community Bike Shop Renovation: Upgrade interiors of commercial suites used for community programming. May include painting, tiling, flooring, counters, cabinets, bathrooms, etc.

Private Residence renovation: Third story addition for a downtown residence. May include framing, drywall, new structural beams, new HVAC, flooring, plumbing, electrical.

Qualifications

  • 5-10+ years of experience as a carpenter or associated trade
  • Preferably red seal/journeyman certification in carpentry
  • Ability to manage a budget, schedule, order/receive materials, train and direct.
  • Exceptional facilitation and leadership skills, particularly with disadvantaged community members.
  • Proficiency with tiling and/or drywall taping is an asset
  • Ability to motivate, train, and direct staff and encourage a team spirit.
  • Knowledge of the needs and barriers of unemployed individuals with sensitivity towards cultural and economic differences.
  • Access to a vehicle to transport tools and crewmembers (as needed), valid G driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
  • In-depth knowledge of Employment Standards, Human Rights Code, OH&SA.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $25.00 to $28.00 /hour
