The Homestead Community Addiction program provides addiction counselling and relapse prevention strategies to men and women residing in Scarborough through process groups, life skills classes and individual counselling.  Counsellors also network with community organizations for referrals to the program.

Student Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Co-facilitate process group, relapse prevention, life skills and aftercare
  • Complete assessments for Supportive Housing and Day Program
  • Program development- in terms of planning for day program
  • Reports and statistics
  • Handle a small caseload (3-4) of clients monitored by Case Manager and Manager

Potential Experience and Learning in this Role: 

The Student will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced Counsellors and the Manger who deliver Client Centered Programs with the following:

  • Make contact/build rapport with clients who are presently in an addiction recovery program
  • Awareness of issues around and experience in dealing with concurrent disorders; marginalized populations; spiritual issues in recovery
  • The ability to provide trauma informed services
  • Assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective one-on-one counselling; support group facilitation; classroom teaching; outreach and pretreatment services
  • Addiction Case Management
  • Supportive and crisis counselling
  • Training and experience in the delivery of program in the following areas: 12-Step Program; Relapse Prevention; Life Skills
  • Identify and assess short and long term goals with client
  • Provide ongoing Relapse Prevention Counselling and support client in their recovery goals
  • Support clients to implement their action plan
  • Provide referrals, as required, to connect clients to appropriate community support services
  • Provide life skills teaching to clients, as required
  • Maintain accurate and professional client documentation
  • Attend team meetings as required
  • Community networking
  • Discharge Planning
  • Report to Manager of Addiction Supportive Housing Program

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

*International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. As the objective of the CSJ program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
