2-Part Time Contract Position (24 hours up to 34 hours per week)

Including weekdays, weekend and Holiday coverage

Intervenors are professionals who provide primarily communication interventions to an individual who is deafblind. The Intervenor mediates between the person who is deafblind and her or his environment to enable her or him to communicate effectively with and receive non-distorted information from the world around them.   An intervenor provides necessary supports and motivation for the individual to become independent and an active part of their environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide ongoing intervention to a Deafblind Individual in their home environment and the community.
  • Use appropriate total communication techniques based on person’s specific communication support needs to relay the information to the person.
  • The Intervenor/Direct Support Professional provides input and participates as part of the team, in the overall program development, while following the Philosophy of Intervention.
  • Provides input as part of the team into the development of the person’s goals and objectives.
  • Provides a level of Intervention that supports the person to be as personally successful as possible in all aspects of daily living and life skills including personal hygiene.
  • Ability to assist in developing social networks and advocate for support and services to enhance meaningful participation in community.
  • Complete necessary agency Medication administration training.
  • Ability to liaise with family, medical and other community services and agencies.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Monitor the health, safety and well-being of the person and report any issues or concerns to family


Mary Centre is interested in the candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Completion of a college diploma or certificate in: Intervenor for Deafblind Persons course.
  • People who have completed or near completion of either of Intervenor for Deafblind Persons Developmental Service Worker (DSW), Social Service Worker (SSW), Community Service Worker (CSW) and have a knowledge or willingness to learn techniques for providing Intervenor Services to an person with deafblindness through a total communication approach (Sign Language in Signed Exact English -Training on signs in the Individuals daily routine will be provided) will also be considered.
  • Ability to understand and apply different communication methods and learning styles.
  • Two (2) or more years’ experience in a supporting people in the Adult Developmental Services Sector and /or the Deafblind community.
  • Ability to work well in a Team environment as well as independently
  • Good Interpersonal Skills, ability to work effectively as part of the team.
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills (written & verbal).
  • First Aid/CPR, UMAB, CPI
  • Have a clear Vulnerable Persons Reference Check (dated within the last six (6) months)
  • French language skills will be considered and asset.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving physical activity, including lifting, bending and prolonged standing.
  • Working knowledge of computers and software such as Microsoft Office, Email and the internet.
  • Ability to respond to a flexible work schedule involving shifts and/or emergency staffing needs
  • These are contract positions. Must be available to work shift work, days, evenings, Saturday, Sunday and holidays.
  • A valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required
