Kensington-Bellwoods Community Legal Services (KBCLS) is seeking someone with a Human Resource background to join its Board of Directors.


KBCLS is a not-for-profit community legal clinic, funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide free legal services to low-income residents of our community.  Legal services include providing summary advice, representation and assistance, as well as referrals on non-legal matters of concern to clients.  Areas of law practiced by staff lawyers and legal workers include income maintenance, tenants’ rights, employment standards, human rights and immigration.  We are also engaged in a range of public legal education, law reform, and community development activities which include community outreach and community organizing.

The Board of Directors oversees the work of the clinic, which is carried out by paid unionized staff, and volunteers.


  1. Serve in a volunteer capacity as a member of the Board that is committed to:
    • Addressing the legal and community development needs of low-income individuals and families;
    • Goals that include working towards the elimination of poverty in our society, and increasing access to justice.
  1. Attend monthly Board meetings, and other Board meetings as necessary.
  2. Participate in the life of the organization between Board meetings as necessary and appropriate.
  3. Act as a resource on issues regarding staff relations and our collective agreement, bearing in mind that there is no on-site management at the clinic, and that the clinic considers itself to be a progressive employer.


    • Experience in the human resource field;
    • Experience with a unionized environment would be an asset;
    • An understanding of the KBCLS community and a passion for its cause;
    • Ability to operate as part of a team.
    • Preference will be given to individuals living and/or working within the clinic’s catchment area (south of Bloor to Lake Ontario, west of Yonge, east of Ossington/Strachan).
