We are seeking volunteer fixers to repair common household items at our Repair Cafe!

GreenMark is a group of environmental youth catalysts, in partnership with the City of Markham and Youth Challenge International's (YCI) Innovate My Future program. Our mission is to reduce residential waste in Markham by making repair cafes more frequent and accessible. Our purpose is to engage the community by creating a space for environmental awareness, education, and service to make the city we live in a greener space for everyone!

We are hosting a Repair Cafe on February 8th where we will be providing repair services to the community, free of charge, in efforts to sustain the materials citizens own and promote the long-term use of products to reduce waste. Our repair cafe will be focused on repairing small hand-held items and clothing. These can include, sewing tears and holes, simple machines, small gardening tools, battery-operated appliances, household appliances (such as lamps and vacuums), and kitchen appliances (such as blenders and toasters).

Volunteers are tasked with the job of fixing items preferably within a half hour time period and explain to the owner of said item the issue and how to potentially repair it in the future. Novice fixers may be paired with more experienced ones.

We're seeking creative and technical volunteers who have any of the following skillset:

  • Have a strong background in fixing small household appliances or hand-held items like lamps, vacuums, blenders, toasters, simple machines, battery-operated appliances etc.
  • Have a strong background in sewing tears and holes on clothing
  • Volunteers must also love challenges, solving problems, and have a knack for creativity!

  • Assist participants as they enter the repair cafe
  • Provide them with knowledge on repair cafes and spread awareness on fixing and reusing products
  • Fix items that are in need of repair
  • Walk through owners’ of the items on how to fix the problem in the future

  • Free lunch and refreshments
  • Volunteer hours and references
  • Opportunity to make an impact in the community and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills by fixing materials in need of repair
