Volunteering at DCGT (Peel):
We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about helping others, enjoy speaking with people from all walks of life, and have an openness and willingness to help those in times of crisis/isolation and to be an supportive and listening ear to Helpline callers. 

Through your training, you will learn valuable conversation based, de-escalation and helping conversation methods that can help you become an even better communicator and a more active and empathetic listener.

Role Description – Helpline Volunteer

  • Provide immediate confidential crisis, suicide and mental health support on DCGT Peel's 24/7/365 lines in a fast-paced and supportive environment
  • Utilize Solution Focused Helping Conversations with callers/clients
  • Support and manage crisis situations over the phone, and provide (when appropriate) information and referrals to callers/clients
  • Assess risks with callers by exploring concerns, ask clarifying questions, and discussion of options to provide appropriate emotional support to callers
  • Provide active and empathetic support to callers in need of a listening ear
  • Document and summarize calls as needed
  • Receive regular and ongoing feedback for improvement


  • 18 years of age or older
  • Excellent computer skills and/or a willingness to learn 
  • Warm, friendly disposition
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Interest in learning and applying helpline responder skills and a willingness to grow in your role and be open to ongoing constructive feedback
  • Ability to be level headed in stressful situations
  • Accepting of callers/clients with a variety of concerns and callers/clients with varying backgrounds/cultures/values/etc.
  • Able to learn and follow policies and procedures
  • Excellent command of the English language (spoken and written)
  • Proficiency with: Cantonese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish, Hindi, Punjabi, or Urdu and asset
  • Non-judgmental/openness to speaking with people from all walks of life



  • Vulnerable Sector Police Record Search
  • 2 references (ideally from a professional or volunteer environment) 
  • Able to commit to 46 hours of training (3 Saturdays in a row of in-class training, approx. 6-8 hours supplementary reading; and approx. 8 hours of on-the-phones coaching training)
  • Commitment: 100 hours of volunteer service within 8 months (approx. 12 hours per month)
