After many years of outreach, advocacy and engagement, Edmonton officially become the 17th municipality and the 2nd largest municipality in Canada to become a Fairtrade Town on September 26, 2013. A permanent committee was struck to promote continued growth in the awareness, availability and consumption of Fair Trade products in Edmonton.
On June 15, 2016, the committee became a Registered Society with the official name of Fair Trade Edmonton Council.
Fair Trade Edmonton Council aims to be a reliable resource for individuals, businesses and associations interested in Fairtrade or Fair Trade and a respected promoter of Fair Trade in Edmonton and Alberta.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENT VOLUNTEERS
What we are looking for: We strive to promote the awareness and adoption of Fair Trade. One way in which we do this is through awareness events. We are looking for volunteers to help spread the good word about Fairtrade by participating in awareness events organized by the committee. All new volunteers with be provided an orientation to Fairtrade and Fair Trade Edmonton Council - as well as an information reference sheet with common questions - so that you can be confident when engaging with members of the public. If volunteers are eager to help out with the planning of awareness events, we would be more than happy to collaborate. Awareness events typically range from quarterly events with local universities or community groups to quarterly or bi-annual presentations for primary schools, to an larger-scale awareness event centred around World Fairtrade Day (2nd Saturday in May of every year).
Deliverables/Duties: The Fair Trade Ambassador volunteer opportunities are endless and can range from small short term commitments to longer-term staggered commitments; opportunities are as follows:
- Participating in Fairtrade community outreach events in collaboration with post-secondary institutions
- Delivering Fairtrade presentations for primary schools
- Helping with coordination and public awareness at yearly outreach event
- Communications and coordination with other volunteers
Expected time commitment is about 2 hours every month or two. With an option to join a 2 hour monthly meeting once a month with the Steering Committee. The initial orientation session is expected to take about 1 hour.
Qualifications: No qualifications needed. A passion for ethical consumerism is all that is required.
