Chimo is a non-profit organization serving people in crisis, transition and through education. Our mission is to promote justice and address violence by fostering and providing quality, integrated services, education and housing programs designed to inspire well-being and healing for people in crisis.

Created in Richmond, British Columbia in 1973, Chimo Community Services now serves over 10,000 individuals and families each year from different cultural backgrounds, age groups, family lifestyles, and economic situations. Through nine program areas, Chimo provides diverse services from community building to prevention, from individual crisis support to advocacy, and from peer support to education. Chimo engages in collaborative community planning and develops innovative resources to address emerging needs.

Position Description

Volunteers work one on one with individuals and families coping with difficult situations. They help identify issues, provide practical assistance, connect people with needed community resources, need based accompaniments to government offices and advocate for clients. They deal with a diverse range of issues including poverty law (employment, housing, welfare, debt, tenancy issues,) and family law.

Position Requirements

Must be 19 years of age or older
Successful completion of Chimo's Core Training and Personal Advocacy Training
Available to volunteer during Mon-Fri 9am-4:30pm or Tue 3-7pm
Complete a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check

We ask that volunteers commit to working one four-hour shift per week for a minimum of 100 hours after completion of training.

Benefits and Recognition

Volunteering at Outreach and Advocacy allows you to develop and practice personal advocacy skills, and to become familiar with various community and government resources and regulations. We offer an extensive training program for Outreach & Advocacy volunteers for approximately 40 hours of classroom training over 6-7 weeks, including specialized training. There is a cost of $85.
