It’s a pleasure to meet you. Now, let us introduce ourselves!

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto keeps families close. We encompass a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven in-hospital Family Rooms across the Greater Toronto Area and in Northern Ontario. We strive to provide a sense of normalcy for our families during a chaotic and traumatic time and provide a variety of programs and services to support the whole family.

RMHC Toronto camp provides a sense of normalcy for children during a very difficult and unpredictable time. It helps children to have meaningful distractions and focus on being a child. It provides a safe environment for children to talk about their emotions, make social connections, and have a sense of belonging in their own community. It helps children redirect their focus on having fun and making lasting summer memories.

What’s in it for you:

This is an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the world of family-centred care, to gain a deeper understanding of the issues faced by families with a sick child, and to know at the end of each shift that you have made a difference in the lives of our families.

Why we want you:

We are looking for people to join our team in delivering play-based programming and providing a safe, fun and creative environment for each and every child while understanding individual strengths and needs. We look to our volunteers to engage the children and youth during program time and to model supportive friendships to promote growth and success.

For caregivers, we want them to have the peace of mid knowing their children are safe and having fun during the day while caregivers attend to their own needs and tasks during the day. Having helpful volunteers reassures the caregivers that their children have the support and care they need.

Skills you need:

Do you enjoy volunteering in a setting where every day can be different? Would a highlight of your day include working with a smiling, imaginative, enthusiastic, spirited and sometimes sticky child? Do you have one or two years of proven experience working with children and/or youth in a professional setting? Do you have the ability to work well with children and adults under stress or in a crisis situation? Do you have a second language or
are you fluent in the jargon of youth of today? Are you able to uphold boundaries and confidentiality?

Commitment:

One 3.5 hour shift per week, same day, same time. Shifts available: Monday to Friday 9:30 am – 1:00 pm; 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm; and full day 9:30 am – 4:30pm

Camp runs July 2 – August 28, 2019

Why:

We need people who are reliable, responsible and who can be a positive role model. We need to create an environment of support through continuity, consistency and familiarity for our families. This is especially important to the children in our House. They will remember you because of your warmth and friendliness, and they and their parents will look forward to seeing you again.

We can’t budge on:

A current Vulnerable Sector Screening check, a recent AODA certification (online training will be provided upon acceptance as a volunteer) and two current references. You also must be able to attend one of the following orientation dates: Saturday June 22nd, 2019, 10am – 2pm or Tuesday June 25th, 2019, 10am – 2pm

Interested?

If you answered ‘yes’ to the above questions, please send your cover letter and resume outlining relevant experience working with children and your availability to volunteers@rmhctoronto.ca by Monday April 1st, 2019.

Anything else?

Your orientation and training will be provided by the Volunteer Engagement team and the Program Coordinator.
