Role Summary

St. Joe’s is committed to providing patients with the highest quality of patient, family and community focused health care services when they need it most. SJHC is one of Canada’s top community teaching hospitals and provides a unique learning environment to achieve clinical excellence for students from a wide variety of health care professions.


SJHC needs volunteer assistance with our various Inpatient Medicine Units (6M, 6G or 4L) to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for patients. With this volunteer support SJHC is able to enhance the patient care experience of patients and visitors by providing exceptional customer service. 


In your Mealtime Host volunteer role you will have the opportunity to:

·Engage patients prior to mealtime and clear their table trays in preparation for the meal's arrival

·Visit with the patients and share any concerns that are brought up by the patients with their healthcare team

·Provide non-medical supports to the patient including comfort measures such as getting fresh ice, water and/or juice.

- Assist with other duties as assigned.


We are looking for applicants who possess the following qualifications:

·Passionate and committed to making a difference by enhancing the patient care experience

·Exemplify the values of SJHC which include respect, dignity and compassion

·Strong interpersonal and communication skills--enjoy visiting and talking with patients

·Flexible with the ability to adapt to change and shifting priorities

·Ability to handle confidential matters with tact and dignity while dealing with various situations

·Ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment


Time Frame:

Length of commitment: Minimum one year commitment is preferred, one shift per week.

 Shifts available Monday to Friday  11 am - 1 pm

or  4:30 pm - 6:30 pm-- These shifts are suitable for Youth volunteers (16+) who would like to volunteer after school hours.



         16 years old or older

         Commit to volunteering once a week for one year

         Consent to and complete a criminal reference check if 18 years or older (no additional cost to the volunteer)

         Complete a two step Tuberculosis test

         Provide two references as part of your volunteer application 

         Attend a mandatory Orientation Session
