Scribble Me Silly works to create positive spaces where children can rediscover what it means to be a kid. We connect with children, youth and families in shelters, transition homes and community centres. We share our creative expertise with children of all ages, and firmly believe that playfully expressing oneself through the creation of art is essential to the flourishing of a child’s spirit. Children should be children, regardless of their circumstance. To achieve this vision, we provide customized arts programming that connects young people from diverse experiences with artists in a positive, supportive and fun environment.

The Opportunity

Scribble Me Silly is recruiting for a Human Resources Board Member for its Board of Directors. We are a grassroots organization inspired by an idea brought to life 10 years ago by our founder Isabel Rodriguez and countless supporters in the community. We are a working board of members who balance governance, strategic planning with doing the work of the organization. This includes administrative tasks, fundraising, event management and more – we actively roll up our sleeves to achieve our goals.

Scribble Me Silly recently developed a new 3-year strategic plan, including comprehensive goals to expand programming in Toronto and to diversify the volunteers and artists who support our programs. We are looking for a person with HR experience who will support the recruitment, hiring and retention of volunteers and artists to fuel this expansion.

Responsibilities

Board members meet once a month for two hours. These in-person meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at the Ralph Thornton Community Centre at 765 Queen Street East, Toronto. Board term is a minimum of one year. As this is very much a working board, members complete work related to their specific roles to actively achieve progression on strategic goals between meetings. Board members are expected to uphold the values of Scribble Me Silly in all that we do:

Fun is the core value of SMS. SMS believes in creating a fun environment for the children and youth in our programs, as well as the artists and volunteers, in order to foster a comfortable space for self-expression.

We trust that our volunteers and artists are accountable and endorse the values SMS believes in, and that they will develop trust with our clients.

Our programs reflect our passion for creative arts and youth development. We leverage the creative abilities of artists and to develop customized programs that support skills development.

BRAVERY

We recognize it takes courage for individuals to take the initiative and break away from the status quo. By providing a fun, positive experience through our programming, SMS aims to empower all individuals to be self-expressive for a lifetime.

COLLABORATION

We believe in the power of collaboration. Children and youth in our programs, as well as the artists and volunteers, learn from each other and enable each other to develop.

RESPECT

Children and youth in our programs, as well as the artists and volunteers, come from diverse family backgrounds and experiences and have different personality and communication styles. We respect and leverage these individual differences.

 

We constantly navigate through change, and are recruiting at a key point in time of expansion. Board members can expect to innovate, exchange ideas, learn from one another and collaborate to bring ideas to life. Agility, the ability to work in the ‘grey’ and professionalism are key traits that will allow the board to succeed in achieving organizational goals.

Process for Submitting an application to join the Scribble Me Silly Board of Directors

The Board of Directors and Program Leaders will conduct a telephone interview and will schedule in-person interviews with selected individuals. Following interviews, successful candidates will be notified of their recommendation to the greater Board for approval at the next scheduled monthly Board Meeting. Scribble Me Silly is grateful for all expressions of interest, however will only follow up with those applicants we feel best align with our current needs.
