A culturally focused, non-profit senior care home in the Strathcona neighbourhood is looking for volunteers with fundraising experience, event coordination experience and who have a passion working with seniors.

Please send a email to btse@villacathay with the subject line "Volunteer Opportunity" if you are interested in becoming a volunteer!

We are looking for volunteers for two different roles.

1) The first role is a companion position, seniors often struggle with isolation and loneliness. Visiting a senior for just one hour a week can have a significant positive impact on their mental health and sense of connection and purpose.  We are seeking volunteers to visit seniors living in our residential care home on a one on one basis to share an interest or activity, provide social companionship and provide opportunities for seniors to share their life experiences.

2) Secondly, Villa Cathay is looking for volunteers with fundraising experience either in a formal or informal setting and have experience running fundraising events. Villa Cathay is undergoing a rejuvenation project to rebuild our current 40-year-old home to become one of the largest senior care homes by 2021. Our goal is to raise $5M to help improve existing senior care services, upgrade current equipment and provide additional support to seniors. We are currently on track to fundraise $5M and would welcome any volunteers who have experience in this aspect.

Opportunities & Rewards

Volunteers are Villa Cathay have the opportunity to:

  • network with influential people in the Vancouver community and charitable associations
  • acquire interpersonal, communication, marketing, event coordination, media relations, public relations skills while giving back and help building the community around you
  • build relationships and connect with our seniors
  • help to improve the quality of life for our seniors
  • help to treat and care for our seniors with love, respect and dignity

Roles & Responsibilities

1) Companion

After attending an orientation session, successful applicants will be matched with a senior in our care home.  You will then spend time visiting with the senior on a weekly basis to share conversation, joining in leisure activities together or just escorting the resident out to our private courtyard on warm dry days to enjoy the warmth, fresh air and companionship.  You may escort the senior to the dining room during meal time for him/her to enjoy a meal.

2) Fundraising

Volunteers will connect with our Director of Donor and Community Engagement and discuss where volunteers can utilize their strengths and to see how they can bring a breath of fresh air to the organization.

Successful volunteer must be:

  • Dependable, personable and friendly, patient and willing to commit to a regular schedule.
  • Able to comfortably assist elders who have physical and/or cognitive challenges (Dementia).
  • Physically capable of pushing seniors in wheelchairs and carrying out light physical tasks as required.
  • Fluent in English (written & spoken). Ability to speak Cantonese &/or Mandarin is an asset.
  • Able to follow directions, work together as a team and learn to interact with seniors effectively.

The successful candidate will receive ongoing training, letter of reference (after 30 hours of volunteering) and an invitation to volunteer appreciation events.

All volunteers must pass a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Record Check.  You must also take a Flu shot or wear a mask during flu season (December – March) while volunteering in Residential Care Homes.
